Is it possible to be a member of a university trumpet studio without majoring in Trumpet Performance?
Thanks

No pat answer on this one. It all depends on where you go. Many schools primarily have non-majors participating in the music program and some schools are more geared for pre-professional training of music majors so they get priority. This is a very valid question to ask the studio teacher or band/orchestra directors when visiting and selecting a school. _________________ Bill Siegfried

Not sure what you looking to do. However the answer you were given is what I encountered while visiting and auditioning, a wide variation from school to school. Many schools have education majors in the studio but often they do not take lessons with the professor. |

Years ago when I was in college I was in the School of Engineering and in addition played in a student brass quintet as well as the wind ensemble (top performing group). Even though I wasn't a trumpet performance major or music education major, they made room for me in the studio. As a freshman I was an overflow student with the Horn professor (he was also the coach for the brass quintets), and then beginning in my sophomore year through graduation I studied with the trumpet professor. With a full engineering load, 2 ensembles, and lessons I always felt like I was stretched a little thin, but I really enjoyed playing and made time for it (I was glad that the school fit me in). This was at the University of Arizona and there were probably 20+ in the studio at the time. While I wasn't required to play a recital, I did participate in "Trumpet Fest" and did the 1st movement of the Kent Kennan one year (all of the students played in this "concert").
Absolutely look into being a part of the studio! It provided me with the variety that made college more than just studying! _________________ Derek Reaban
