I recently purchased a Yamaha 734, and love it. I’ve been looking more and more into some of these older 3 digit Yamahas, and I see that there was a 3 digit Custom Series around the same time- most notably the YTR-931, 933, and 934 models. Are these horns similar to the other 6xx and 7xx three digit horns where they were inspired by Schilke’s designs? Anyone know anything about them?

I'd like to make clear first that I am currently selling a Yamaha 933 but I hope that my evidence and information shows that I wish to give an impartial opinion first and foremost.

From the articles that I've read (Linked them below) I do believe that while not copies, they pull from Schilke designs. Ren Schilke himself was hired by Yamaha to design some of their pro horns and naturally he used some of his personal designs to create these horns. The common consensus is that these play very well and at the very least on par with Schilke, modern day Xeno's and the like. Now personally I believe the 933ML, the only one I can speak from personal experience plays beautifully. Very flexible, but not too much so. Intonation is also very, very nice. The previous owner used it a lot for Jazz gigs but I currently use it in a classical setting and it blends well but if pushed by the right player and perform well as lead. Overall a very versatile horn and a joy to play.

Interesting. How would you say that the 933 compares to the 6xx and 7xx horns?

As for how they personally compare, I cannot say as I've never played the 700 series. But based on pictures, history, and design I'd say they're close. As the 9xx model is a rung higher, it can be assumed the craftsmanship is the highest, as these were the flagship models of the Yamaha company. The first video is my expectation of a 734 and the second, excuse the bad audio is of the 933/934. Of course as always much of the playing is player dependent but can really be molded to the player. Personally, with all the bias that comes with it I'd build quality is better, and with my playing experience the feel, blow, and intonation is really amazing. As I said previously better than any 8335 or bach strad I've played.

From what I've read it seems like the 9xx is like that the 9xxx series is the the 8xxx series from Yamaha today. Closely the same but better production, care, and materials are used. Also the 9xx just looks really unique, with the 3 different materials used.

G'day Kevin,

A great resource, if you haven't seen it before, is https://sites.google.com/site/yamahacollectoryamahaloyalist/

Which lists all the model numbers of Yam instruments, and occasionally has a link to a picture and so on.

The 9xx series (3 digit) I think ran for only a very short time, and it's not clear to me what the differences are to the "standard" 6xx and 7xx series, except perhaps for a higher level of finish. As an owner of a 634 (which I've had for over 30 years), and past owner of a 732, I'd have to say the 9xx ones must be BLOODY good to be better.

Also, re: Shilke. Yes, he had a hand in designing the horns, so they have some Shilke "trademarks" like multibore design and reversed leadpipes and no braces on the tuning slides, but in my opinion they are not "clones" of Shilke. So, when you might read elsewhere that, for example the 634 is a "clone" of the B5, don't believe it, as they don't play the same.

Main thing is enjoy your 734 and play the hell out of it!

Cheers,
Roger
