This is to let everyone know that The Reinhardt Foundation is once again represented at The International Trumpet Guild Conference, this year in Minneapolis MN. Last year it was held in Australia and we did not have a booth. Many will remember our presence in Harrisburg PA the year before where Rich Willey and I shared space and how very successful it was.
Please tell all of your friends and come drop by yourself to support us in this Reinhardt exposure. Although we won't be presenting like we did in 2005 at UMASS with Rich Hanks and myself, we will offer the opportunity for visitors to become members of The Foundation, have all of our books available for sale, and make it possible for Orientation & Analysis lessons with anyone interested in being initiated into the World of Reinhardt. And of course, spread the word!
A brief Foundation Newsletter is now available at www.airstreamdynamics.com or here at www.fixyourbrass.blogspot.comfor anyone wanting to sign up for it and to get continuing Foundation Newsletters. Also, the ITG website has all the details that one can find on another Forum here at TH.

Let me know up front if you'll be there and I'll be expecting you.

Till then,

Dave S.

To anyone interested, my travel to Minneapolis will include: The 18th of May passing through and having lunch at Moosewood in Ithica NY with a stopover in either Buffalo NY or Cleveland OH. The 19th will be a stopover around Chicago.
I will be in Minneapolis from the 20th-21-22nd doing a tour of Geodesic Dome Homes and will have evenings free there.
The ITG Conference will be from the 23rd until the 28th where I will be available for any bookings for initial lessons, follow-up lessons, consultations and PSYCH-K sessions. Mark Richardson will be assisting at times at The Reinhardt booth where all Pivot publications from Rich Willey will be available for purchase, along with the updated and complete Encyclopedia of The Pivot System.
On my return trip from the 29th until June 1st, I am thinking about making a swing up around the great lakes over to Toronto or Montreal for the 3 day journey back to Keene NH.

I invite all to visit The Reinhardt Foundation's booth and learn more about Reinhardt, sign up for membership in the Foundation, or just say "Hi". I have 3 lessons already booked and look forward to meeting all interested attendees.

Can I influence you to make it to Toronto, finally, Dave?

(If absolutely not, I may be able to swing a trip to Montreal. But Toronto would be better, and I'm sure Cameron and dad would be happy to see you, too.)

Paul,
Triple A (AAA) just gave me an alternate route through Toronto and I am considering it, since I have my passport now. I won't know until the week of the event how soon I must get home, so will post my return trip sometime mid-week around the 25th. I think Cameron and his Dad may come to ITG, but haven't heard from them.
Here is the Schedule of ITG Conference as of now.

New photos and a new look has just been applied to The Reinhardt Foundation's website www.reinhardtfoundation.org for the upcoming ITG event in Minneapolis. Mark Richardson and Jon Lax are so far the only Reinhardt attendees that I know of that will be there. Rick Gordon ran across Wayne Bergeron at an airport last week and Wayne was very interested in Reinhardt's way of teaching and will possibly drop by our booth for some information. I will keep TH and this forum posted on the event as things happen and news unfolds. See you there!

p.s. Rich Hanks' Youtube is the first feature on the STUDENTS page! Check it out.

Very nice, Dave.

Is that the Nelson Riddle, listed as a student?

Dave, I love the updates to the website and I feel honored to make it onto a list of players of the caliber listed. I should re-shoot that video, though, because I think I've fine-tuned my motion since then and can play that exercise better. Maybe I might do that sometime so that it might be more instructional...

I really wish I could make it out to the ITG this year and I considered it but my gig has me tied up during that time! Maybe next year we can do another presentation! I have more to say now ...

In other news, I have been spreading the Reinhardt gospel out here in the Pacific Northwest and have taught a number of (mostly) informal lessons and people are really digging the information and getting a lot out of it. If anyone on here is in the Seattle/Portland area and is looking for a Reinhardt teacher, contact me via PM and I would be happy to help!

Rich Hanks

P.S. Paul, yes it is!

Very cool. I had no idea he was a trombone player (although I'm not all that surprised!).

Would love to see a better video of that, Rich. Want to tell us what you've fine-tuned?

Paul,
In Philadelphia, around the late 70's, Nelson Riddle was booked at the Museum steps on a one night summer concert. I was called to play lead with the local players and we had a rehearsal the afternoon of the evening gig. Nelson and I talked about Doc (we were only a block away from Doc's studio at a rehearsal studio) and he said how much he owed Doc for his success.
He told me some great stories and I had related some things about Nelson, like how he and Milt Bernhart would love Doc's warm ups, in an early PivoTalk Newsletter that I had done after Doc had passed away with stories from Don Wittiker, the retired bass trombone player from Radio City Music Hall in NYC.
The band was really good and those arrangements! Wow. Anyway, we got to the gig, played one number and it began to rain. Gig cancelled on the spot, Nelson left Philly that night and I told Doc of the experience. He really liked Nelson and Nelson was a real Reinhardt champion.

On Rich's video... I think I should point out that the Octave Slurs is an exercise that is definitely in the spirit of Reinhardt's ideas, but I wrote it. It was not one of Reinhhardt's own exercises.

Well, a couple things. One is that I have found a better, more open position for my jaw which allows for more consistent air/lip contact and less overall motion throughout the range of the horn. Second is I am more dialed-in with my jaw motion and have found more economy of motion. Just part of the development processes, really...

I think I should point out that it may imply I am Rich's "instructor"...I will definitely correct THAT! Rich is a certified teacher of The Pivot System, as deemed worthy to be so by me and The Reinhardt Foundation and it would seem to indicate that I gave him this "Reinhardt" exercise. Credit where credit is due, of course, Doug. It demonstrates the Pivot and is an extended version of how to "stretch" the playing groove over many octaves. Rich saw me for about 5 years and I have been only a small part in his development. He certainly was a very accomplished trombone player before I even saw him.
I will see that the caption is corrected to say it is a Doug Elliot exercise, that Rich studied with me and that it demonstrates a IIIA Pivot maneuver. That should satisfy everyone, I think, including me.
Thanks,
Dave S.

I am compiling a summary of The Reinhardt Presence at ITG this past week and will either post it on www.pivotalk.com save it all for our Newsletter, or post it here on TH. I haven't decided yet where I can have the space to tell all I can about what went down and that the event included some fantastic playing, including personalities I talked to at our table - notables, Roger Ingram, Marv Stamm, Bruce Gates, Terry Wharberton, to name a few.

Finishing up my report on the ITG Conference and chose to put it in The Reinhardt/Airstream Newsletter's Summer edition. It should be ready in a few days. You can log on to my website www.airstreamdynamics.com and request to be on the mailing list to receive your copy if you are not a member of The Reinhardt Foundation. In the meantime, I made a free booklet available on our table at the Conference entitled "10 THINGS YOU CAN DO TO IMPROVE YOUR PLAYING" and will be posting, one at a time over the next 10 weeks, each one on my blog www.fixyourbrass.blogspot.com . I can only tell you right now that the Conference was a great success. One special guest: Bruce Gates.

The first feedback from the Newsletter: From Bruce Gates -

"The .pdf came through perfectly and it all looks great!
I really enjoyed reading the stories about the various visitors to the booth. It was reminiscent of many of the same things I've encountered over the years (both good and bad) whenever I mention that I studied with Reinhardt."

Thanks again,
Bruce
