I just got to see Terence Blanchard at the Newport Jazz Festival and he had some amazing things to say about jazz as an art form. If you get the chance to go next year, do it! |

Hi Jason,
Some great information on your site. Do you have any experience using the Irealb app and if you do possibly some suggestions for use with your "Licks of the day"? _________________ Librarian - Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra

Hey Don,
I use the iRealb app on my phone. Not for every practice session, but it is a great tool. I would suggest playing through your favorite(s) Lick of the Day without any accomp first. Play through it rubato and try different articulations. Play it in all keys. Play it around the cycle, then up/down in whole steps and try up in minor thirds. I think it is important to first practice something without an accompaniment before adding something like iRealb or an Aebersold.
But, since you asked specifically about the iRealb: You can customize charts and make your own exercises or you can work with some of those that have already been created. If you go to the Composers tab-look for the author 'Exercise.' They have a lot of pre-made exercises that include cycles, ii-V-I, etc. Once you have played through a lick/pattern/riff, etc on your own you can start with the iRealb at a comfortable tempo and work through some of those exercises with the Lick of the Day. Another fun exercise is taking the Lick of the Day and playing it through the different key areas of a standard (there are thousands of them on that app).
Thanks for checking out my site-I hope it adds some value and benefit to your playing in some way! We just had our 250th Lick of the Day posted yesterday, but I've been focused on my CD and its release latelt that I forgot about it! _________________ Improvisation Masterclass info: https://bit.ly/2U6im2V
