Hi,

I just had a couple of questions on the 6 notes exercise which i recently started doing again. I'm trying to approach the exercise as relaxed as i possible can be and finding that on the repeat when i get up to about the Bb/B my corners are starting to collapse in on themselves so the C is very hard to play and most of the time doesnt come out...

Should i be holding the corners more tight? i'm afraid that if i do this i'll become more tense and loose the more free relaxed sound i am getting.

Carmine would say "Don't worry about the corners, what happens outside the mouthpiece is just a reflection of what happens inside the mouthpiece". Just keep the blow going and the foot tapping and don't pay attention to how it sounds or feels. Those things will take care of themselves.

And (from one of his students),
Stop thinking about what is happening physically, just play.

You shouldn't try to hold your corners tight OR loose for these exercises. Don't try. Just do.

Start with the amount or level of non-relaxed muscles that you need to get the first note. Think of playing the next note with that same amount. Of course it's normal to increase the level of muscle involvement as you go higher, but it is good to make the perception to you not so noticeable.

Question: During the measure of rest in between the whole notes should I allow the muscles to relax or should I keep the same level of tension as when playing the notes? I don't remember how I did it back in the day for Carmine and I've developed the habit of relaxing everything in between playing notes (and while breathing) the way my idol Philip Smith does while performing music.

Carmine did it both ways. If you relax it will be best to not disturb the setting.

should i also not be thinking about pressure? I can feel after i finish the exercise that i probably am using a bit much and there is usually a reddish circle mark on my chops....

The exercises, if done as CC recommends. will take care of pressure. Don't think about it

To the OP

I studied with Carmine for a little over 5 years in the late '60's-early '70"s. I STILL do his stuff religiously and teach it to my private students as well. I think what everyone is trying to tell you is this: DON"T THINK...JUST DO!!!! Just go through the exercises and concentrate on the 4 Rules. DO NOT think about ANYTHING else except those rules and getting through the particular exercise you're playing. EVERYTHING else will automatically take care of itself over time when everything comes into sync. As Carmine told me MANY times..."these studies are NOT meant to sound good"!!! NOBODY does when they're working on these. The proof in the pudding comes when you are playing MUSIC!! These studies are "Calisthenics"...NOT pretty music per say!!! That's why Carmines book is called "Calisthenics for Brass"!!!" Nuff said...go practice!
