Hi,

I'm Chicago downtown area for the week on business and would like to browse a Brass Instrument store while I'm here.

I was wondering if there is an equivalent of Rayburns in Boston here in the big city of Chicago?

Any must see for a part time trumpet player while in town?

Mike

Downtown Chicago is a wasteland as far as instrument stores go but you might find some pawn shops. You could try the Chicago Music Mart but I doubt you'll find much of interest. You could take the Metra BNSF from Union Station out to LaGrange and visit Dr. Valve's shop.

If you have a car you could drive to Melrose Park and visit the Schilke factory.

Music and Arts (Naperville and Itasca), Band Source (Downers Grove), Ellman Music (Naperville) and Sam Ash (Lombard) are the most likely locations for retail horn shopping in the Chicago area.

Check by phone to be sure but all have Bach and Yamaha horns with a smattering of Conns and (at Band Source) Courtois.

As the other folks have already mentioned, you will not find a Dillon-esque selection of trumpets in any of the stores in Chicago or the surrounding 'burbs. If you have a car and some time you could drive east to WWBW but that is a 90 mile road trip. Melrose Park is much closer, so if you have a car, call the Schilke folks to see if you can come for a visit. Assuming the horns have not been shipped off to a show, you should be able to try everything (or virtually everything) Schilke makes. It is likely that Phil or Pat would also be able to give you a tour of the factory. Call ahead, don't just drop in. You will have a good time -they are great hosts.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I don't have a car and very limited time.

I was able to tour the Shilke factory some years ago and it was very cool.

Will note the suggestions for next time with a car and more time.

Ray's Music Exchange!

The exterior scenes in front of Ray's Music Exchange were shot on the corner of 47th and Prairie, with Ray Charles' store actually being the Palace Loan Company, located at 300 E. 47th Street. Today it's Shelly's Loan Company, but is clearly the same building. (text from another website at http://www.chicago-l.org/stations/47th.html)
