In a recent post the Capt. suggested the use of Castrol Super Clean. I tried it and my horns have never been cleaner. The silver Bb (sorry Capt., a Bach) looks as if it was polished and buffed. The valves look like new. With virtually no scrubbing the product removed the oxidation from the slides. I can't recommend this product highly enough, although next time I'll wear rubber gloves. It is a bit rough on the hands. |

If it's that rough on the hands, have you given thought to the long term effects of it on brass, silver plate, etc.? Anything that cleans that "aggressively" as you describe, has an effect on the materials. _________________ "Music is like candy, you throw the (w)rappers away." |

that should not be surprising.
Kirk posts more useful information than most of us here.
He's way more informative than some heavy posters here on TH. _________________ Mouthpiece Maker

Gravity sucks. That pull makes a pipe convey the most liquid when only 95% full. Better to not be completely full of anything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! _________________ kochaavim, csillaagkep, αστερρισμός, konnstelacji, connstellation... ...a.k.a. the 28A!

I suspect this product is no more harsh than the petroleum based solvents that a lot of shops us when they do a chemical bath. I also suspect that the professional repair people use gloves when handling any harsh chemicals. I can't speak to the long term use of any chemical. Simply don't have the knowledge base in that area. |

Does it need to be diluted? If so, what is the optimal dilution? _________________ Larry Pfeifer |

As for dilution, Can't say what is optimum. I soaked the disassembled trumpet in hot soapy water for 1/2 hour. Then I sprayed full strength onto the body of the instrument and on all remaining parts. I sprayed directly into the leadpipe, bell, inside all slides, valve casings and the like. Then I swabbed everything and rinsed. You will want to rinse very thoroughly. I did the valves separately in a coffee mug. |

I think I'll stick to products that won't kill me if ingested... like if you accidentally don't get all of it out of your horn. |

Useful or not, no one posts as much as he does either. ...
In fact, I might actually agree, but you have to sift through a myriad of BS, from misspelled words, incorrect punctuation and syntax, the telling of illustrative tales having very little to do with whatever point he gets to, and flat-out misinformation, in order to get to the smallest tidbit of usefulness.
For whatever useful information there might be in all that, for me, it simply is not worth the effort. _________________ Bill Blackwell

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.
It's kind of like the old saw about if you put an infinite number of monkeys in a room for an infinite amount of time, one will eventually accidentally type out some Shakespeare. Kirk uses the same methodology. _________________ Yamaha 8310Z trumpet

Thanks. Only inquired because I saw the product referenced on an auto forum where people liked the product had myriad dilutions for different cleaning jobs......might give it a try. Thanks again. _________________ Larry Pfeifer |

This just really seems like a bad idea. Someone is going to get sick. At least the competing product, Simple Green (which I love, but never use on trumpets) is nontoxic. |
