Hey all,
I'm taking a bus trip in August from Michigan to Texas, and since it's over a day's travel, I hope to be able to get some playing, or at least buzzing, in at the little stops. Is this a safe thing to do? Or are there other things I can do to stay in shape? Thanks! _________________ ***Cassie*** |

Purchase a "BuzzKill". It is a device that appears to be built from a 35 mm film canister that has a reciever on one side that the mouthpiece sticks into. The other side has a hole with a grommet that allows the air to exit. Inside is some sound deadening material.
This allows you to buzz the mouthpiece without making too much noise.

I'm going to need to invest in the Buzzkill, absolutely! It looks pretty snazzy.
I work at a hospital, so hand sanitizer will be at the top of my packing list... _________________ ***Cassie*** |

If nothing REALLY big is coming up on very short notice, then one day off every once in a while won't hurt and can indeed be helpful to stay in shape too.
I've toured very often (and stil occasionally do). Whilst travelling I usually took the day as it came, which sometimes meant playing heavy programs without warming up after a long & uncomfortable trip, or not being able to play on a travel day at all.
It's no big deal at all, believe me. It's part of daily life.

HA! I remember traveling by bus. What we carried in those 35mm film canisters was definitely NOT buzz kill! In fact, that was the furthest thing from our ever expanding minds . . . _________________ Crazy Nate - Fine Yet Mellow Fellow

Whatever you do, when you are having a layover in the bus station, don't let some guy you 'just happen' to meet talk you into sharing a locker with him so that you can go play pinball together. He will palm the key, then all of a sudden he will have to 'go talk to some girls' and disappear along with your horn and all of the luggage in your shared locker....

JBQ,
Very wise advice! Lots of scams can happen while traveling. |

You can always take your mouthpiece into the restroom for a couple of minutes and buzz in there on an hourly basis and maintain your chops to some degree. |

Speaking as a (retired) Road Rat, I wouldn't worry about it. Two days away from the horn's not going to kill you. Take along a good book - maybe an interesting (auto)biography of some musician you like - and a large library of music to listen to. Look out the window. Enjoy the trip. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

1) decline any foot massage offers
2) wear a chastity belt
3) bring mace
4) buzzing in the bathroom is an awful idea
5) wear cloves of garlic around your neck _________________ I am Goro the four arm master of gap measurement. |

Find a seat as far away from the bathroom as you possibly can. _________________ "Music is like candy, you throw the (w)rappers away." |

Keep in mind that there are people off the street who hang out in bus stations. Keep your gear in hand at all times.

My trumpet, mutes, and music in their cases fit in my locked old military duffel bag and I my clothes were in my old B4 flight bag. Too, I've a two day beard and wore plastic framed glasses (military issue style) instead of my rimless pair. Well then I had the health to travel via Greyhound and also had the creds and sidearm on me. Nobody bothered me! |

Thank you everyone for the great advice! I got some good laughs from a lot of it! I ordered the Buzzkill, and it should be waiting for me when I arrive at my destination...I'm leaving Tuesday, and I'm super excited. I've got my patched up jeans, duct tape to put on my older pro-tec case, and plan on getting some pepper spray before I leave.
Thanks again! _________________ ***Cassie*** |
