I'm interested in getting a shallower version of the SC4 for dedicated lead. I really want a Laskey or Hammond style S cup balanced with the other aspects of the SC4.

Has anybody gone through these hoops yet? Does anyone have a 3D scan of an SC4?

Any recommendations? I know Mark curry is always an option, as is getting another SC4 and having Karl Hammond mess with it.

I would really like a matching mouthpiece though!

Thanks!

Well, to answer my own post:

I called Jerry and he had the boys at Kanstul blend together two different shallower SC4 prototypes. Jerry has them and I'm going to check them out this weekend.

The SC4 is like a rally-car or F1. Able to handle any terrain or curve. But playing dedicated lead is more akin to a dragster or a monster-truck. So my aim with the shallower SC4 is not to play any higher, but to be a more specialized tool for the job. (playing lead is a specialist position after all!)

I'll report what I find.

I just met with Jerry to try his two shallower sc4 mouthpieces. The SC6 and SC7. Same characteristics as the SC4 but with progressively shallower cups. The 7 is shallowest but is more bowl shaped than the 6 which seems to be bear resemblance to a giardinelli 10S in cup shape/depth. You can order them from Jerry directly.

The SC6 was the winner for me and I'm getting a cornet version for piccolo. I'm very happy with it!

I agree about the sc6 -great mouthpiece. I got one saturday and played it at big band on monday night -very easy and comfortable to play. It reminds me of an old parduba with better projection.

I see that the SC6 (and SC7) are not yet offered for sale on the MSC website. Can I only buy this through Jerry? Also, I own a Curry 7Z - how does this compare to the SC4, 6 or 7? I'm considering returning to the Superchops approach.

Thanks,
Scott

You can conveniently and securely order Callet SC3, SC4, and SC6 mouthpieces by Visa, Mastercard, or Paypal at the Callet Trumpets site, 24-7.

Trumpet, cornet, flug with Yamaha shank, and flug with Bach shank are all available here:

http://www.callettrumpets.com/Mouthpieces.htm

For a SC7, you would need to contact Jerome directly. His contact information is on the bottom of the linked page.

I'd be interested in a SC3 w a SC6 cup. The rims on the SC4/6 are too wide for me....Heard the SC6 on a Callet Sima last week. Sounded awesome btw.

Mark, Call Jerry, he'll probably make one up for you. Maybe he can call it an SC3s or an SCmc!

Best, Kyle

Timing appears coincidental, but Jerry called me today to let me know that SC3s mouthpieces arrived. Jerry is very excited about the initial test results. This is a standard SC3 mouthpiece but with the shallow cup depth from the SC6.

In the works, a small diameter SC3 and SC3s. To be called the 1* and the 1*s, these will be just like the respective SC3 mouthpieces, but diameter will be apx a Bach 17. Will probably require a pretty advanced embouchure, but should sizzle for the right players. Expected in about 10 days.

Shopping cart for all 3 new mouthpieces will be on the Callet Trumpet site by tomorrow.

They all have wider and flatter rims than the 13a4. The inner diameters are also either similar or a little narrower than a 13a4. However, the thickness and wideness of the rim makes them feel like much wider mouthpieces than they actually are. I transitioned from a 2C/3C situation to the SC4 overnight. The SC4 actually feels more like a 1.5 on my face, but with much more cushion. The depth of the SC3 and SC3 is about a Bach D. The throat has a double-cup thing making the blow very nice and more like a B cup. The 1st cup is "laskey" style meaning that its like a bowl at first but then like a hybrid V. Like and old jet-tone or al-cass. The back-bores are all tighter than average and the shanks are all a little longer than average. I think they are very well designed mouthpieces. Granted, they are less forgiving when not playing in the center than a deeper mouthpiece. But I would rather have the intonation/range/efficiency be default and train to play in the center rather than have the center be easy and the intonation/range/efficiency be a problem.

Talk about timing: I had a lesson with Jerry on Monday morning (Nov 21), and Jerry brought out this new mouthpiece for me to try. I had immediate positive results. My sound was much bigger and more centered and more in tune in the upper register with this SC3s than I've experienced with any other mouthpiece I've ever used. It was also very easy to play. I can't wait to get back home to San Diego so I can use this mouthpiece on my main horn. (I'm traveling with my pocket trumpet, and while this new mouthpiece sounds quite good on it, I can't wait to play this on my regular Bb.)

Anyone else try the SC 3S yet? I'd like to hear some more feedback from anyone currently using the SC 3.

Thanks!

I've got an SC2 and the new SC3S and it's awesome. It really sounds great with better focus with the same great intonation. My embouchure has been developing and this new piece really fits.

I am going to also get the new 1*S to see how that one fits with my development level and I'll have it when I'm ready for it.
