Speaks volumes, doesn't it? Congratulations to Mr. Bilger on his new opportunity. Hopefully the situation in Philly will improve to the point at which he will be able to return wholeheartedly. He is smart to keep his options open. |

I hope orchestra management sees this and takes notice to stop screwing around. |

What a gentleman. That's about as nice a way of telling someone (bigmouth board director) to go to hell as I've ever heard. _________________ Bill Siegfried

Is it likely that he'll end up at UGA full time eventually? |

I hope Philly gets it figured out, and I hope UGA gets to keep Bilger in the process... Winning!

You ain't kidding!
Atlanta is pretty darn close to Athens ... and Hooten is going to LA ....
I keep thinking of Bilger as the new kid on the block but that's because I first heard of him when he came to Dallas in the early 90's, I believe it was ... wow, about 20 years ago now.

I suppose it would really depend on how things go with the orchestra situation in Philadelphia. They (UGA) obviously have the money for a good trumpet teacher and asking someone like Mr. Bilger (or the late Mr. Mills) to come as a (visiting) prof for several years shows they are serious about the tpt. and brass department! Just because you play trumpet, flute or oboe in a major orchestra doesn't mean that you'll automatically get a job at a university. There was a recent faculty position in oboe at a university, and I know several orchestral musicians with major orchestras who applied who didn't get it. The competition is intense at all levels. He's maximizing his options if things don't go well in Philly, as he should. |

Currently he's the 2nd highest paid member of the Philly Orchestra at almost $300K. I wonder if he would be in the ballpark with UGA and possibly AO combined. That's a lot of money... |

That would be ignoring the fact that he already teaches at Curtis and Temple...
The whole situation is sad for everyone, including the ticket holder who now don't get to see him perform the Brandenburg. |

Don't blame David; blame the dysfunctional orchestra management. |

I don't wanna start a huge argument or anything, but wouldn't it make sense for some of the higher paid musicians (and possibly staff too, I'm not really sure what they're salaries are like) in the orchestra to consider taking a 10-15% pay cut in order to keep the orchestra running? I mean, its not that Mr. Bilger doesn't earn every penny of what he's paid, but considering the poor economy and the financial problems of the orchestra, it would seem better to go from 300k a year to 260k a year then hold out to make a point and then have the orchestra fold. Just my opinion. |

If the orchestra folds, everyone, including management, loses. In the natural world a parasite (yes, a nasty analogy) fails if it kills the host. I wish management were more attuned to that.
I agree that Mr. Bilger is a class act, and his letter is superbly written. His skills go well beyond music. _________________ veery715

Can I suggest that we not discuss details of personal salaries online?
Thank you.

Best,
EC | Ed, I respect your point of view but, while I generally agree with you, most of the Philadelphia Orchestra salary information is public and readily available online. One of the privacies that gets lost when people go public is the ability to pick and choose what they want to have public and what they want to keep private. It's the price of fame. Anyway, I didn't see anything in Bilger's letter that indicated he wasn't willing to take a pay cut of some kind. The POA is in bankruptcy and he's creating options for himself. Wise moves. _________________ Bill Siegfried
