Why did this sell for what, to me, seems to have been an unusually high price??

http://www.ebay.com/itm/260840925011

I thought $800-900 was a reasonable going rate on the Selmers.

Maybe the buyer simply revered Jack Stetler, listed as the previous owner.

Just curious .... I own a similar one myself, serial 77xxx, that I've had for over 20 years.

well -- its in immaculate condition, silver plated, blackburn pipes, a great serial number, a case --- seems reasonable to me.

I unloaded one a couple years ago for 1400, wasnt in near that condition. IMO they are worth it -- fantastic little horns, and you can't beat the sound...

Some people prefer the sound of the Selmer.

Several years ago, Dave Trigg traded his Selmer, a lacquered one in nowhere NEAR the nice condition this one was, for a gold-plated Schilke P5-4 in terrific condition.

Both new owners are very, very happy with the trade, and that is all that really counts.

Thats a very reasonable price for a picc in that good of condition....nothing wrong with that price.

Another factor? The seller knew what he was selling, how to describe it, and gave assurance that the buyer would be happy or could return it.

Oh, I am a Selmer picc fan, too, along with the Blackburn pipes.
Just thought the price seemed unusually high but I stand corrected.

Thanks!

Yes, it does seem rather high for an instrument that IMO is not even from the best era (even though it's in perfect shape).
However, in the past I know I've payed prices above market value for 2 or 3 instruments that were either extremely good players, or trumpets I really wanted to own. I never felt sorry for any of those purchases.
As long as you're not aiming to re-sell, to a certain extent it still could be considered a good deal...

Hi,

Marteen, what is the best era for this horn and why?
Thanks a lot.

Personally I prefer the ones from the pre-1971 era, with the ring (tiny garland) around the bell rim.
IMO they had the sweetest sound.

Yeah, I actually had one of those once on trial. It was from one of the guys in Canadian Brass. It was by far the BEST picc I've ever played, really, really sweet sound.

But it was pretty beat up and I was afraid to take a chance on it.

Dave, FWIW:

Over the years I've owned quite some Selmer piccolos.
I've kept the best ones from 1960, 1965 and 1968.
The 1968 one has been my main piccolo since '84 (with B.burn pipes).
My 1960 3-valve Selmer is by far the easiest instrument I've ever used for the muted solo in "Pictures".
