I've built out my horn collection in the last couple years, but this is the first one I'd call an impulse buy. Browsing eBay, I noticed Don Rugg (of California Music Supply, "relic_rescue" on eBay) had slashed the price of an old-logo Carol C trumpet. I'm thrilled with my Carol 506R Bb trumpet (also purchased from Don), so I couldn't resist.
I guess I had SOME research under my belt before ordering. Dr. Dave Harrison (of Wedge fame) has praised Carol C trumpets. Trent Austin also speaks highly of them.
Now, do I need a C trumpet? In the strictest sense, no. For community band and brass quintet work, my Bb is fine. Most of my wedding lit is for D trumpet (which I don't have) or A picc (which I do). I've been transposing hymns at church for years, usually with no problems.
But hey, why not? I got a great deal, and this will eliminate the added stress (however minor) of transposing while performing. I could also benefit from having another tone color in my arsenal. I'm hoping my Carol C has the characteristically brighter tone one expects from a C. The model I bought has a lightweight bell and large (.465) bore. Like my 506R, it has a rose brass bell, which I suppose might darken things a tad, if copper content hype is to be believed.
Once again I'm like a kid waiting for Christmas. I'll post a review here when she arrives. _________________ CarolBrass 658R Bb | CarolBrass 506R Bb | CarolBrass 4000 C | Yamaha 631GS Flugel | CarolBrass 6882T Bb Cornet | Besson 60MD D/Eb | CarolBrass 7770F Picc. | Curry & Reeves mpcs
