Like most players I'm always looking for ways to get better and, thanks to a tip from Brad Goode, I found something pretty exciting in the Reinhardt Forum. It's the "legs" concept, which has to do with mouthpiece placement vis a vis your teeth and suggests that each player needs to find the most stable and thereby most efficient placement even if it is slightly off center.
I discovered that by shifting my mpc so it sits more over a lower incisor I get several steps more range without a loss of tone. What's more the notes come with very little effort.
I suspect I missed this in my early learning due to a misguided desire to play dead center no matter what. What I discovered may not work as well for you because everyone's teeth are different. On the other hand, it may work better! _________________ Jim Hatfield

I think a lot of people don't understand that teeth really do affect how we play. Yes, mindset and approach can help your body naturally overcome these issues, sometimes, we have to work around them. My teeth shifted something terrible because of my wisdom teeth coming in. When I had them pulled a couple years ago, my dentist shaved my front tooth that had developed a ridge. Almost over night I was able to play a third higher. I tend to think that Brad having had tons of experience with concepts and physical knowledge was able to dial you in. I'm glad to hear it.

| This year I got a full upper denture and a lower partial. Such is a total remake of my embouchure and lip with a lapse since mid July 2009, and a triple bypass and post surgical atrial fibrillation in mid 2010, Still, it will happen and be completed about this time 2012 if on schedule. |

Ed,
I pray that your recovery is going well. With a full denture, did you have to make major adjustments to your embouchure? Any quick tips? I have afriend with a similar problem.
Thanks,

Gary, thanks for your Prayers, we all need them.
Yes, as I stated, due to primarily the dentures my embouchure is a total remake, and not unexpected. How well another can accomplish this has many variables inclusive of the fit of the dentures. I've had no complaint about the fit of mine from day one as such got rid of the mess of partial and crowns on the upper replaced with a full upper denture. With now only 4 remaining natural teeth on the lower I got a partial on my dentist's recommendation as my naturals help lock inthe partial. He said many complain about a full lower "rocking".
Yeah, I'm taking it easy and continuing under the care of several Docs, including a pulmonologist for my wind is now not what it use to be. As I found a cornet more free blowing and not requiring as much wind, such is what I've been primarily playing, although I will play a solo of Silent Night on euphonium at the Courthouse band gazebo here in Jackson NC on Christmas eve.
I did acquire a Holton Collegiate cornet checked out and modified by Ivan Hunter with a trumpet mpc receiver. A different sound I'm not accustomed to, but doable for practice.
Yep, the best advice I'd give to all is the 4 Ps: Prayer, Patience, Persistence, and Practice.
