I use this one:

http://www.agmusic.com/mute_master.html

But I don't know if they're still being made. The original inventor, Terry Ross, died over two years ago, but his email is still shown at the bottom of the page.

I use this in the big band I play in, and it works GREAT!

Jeff is right, the hook rocks! I got for free w/ a trumpet, but in hindsight I'd pay the 60$ it's up to now, no question. I have 2 horns & 3 mutes on mine, convenient & rock solid.

I've tried several varieties and the one I like best is the Silent Mute Tray from www.brassaid.com

It holds four mutes, hangs from the bottom of a Manhasset stand, and fits in a single tpt case.

Might work with a big band front style stand - not sure.

The one that sells on Horntrader looks good but $60+ is really steep!

When I got my Indiana Music Racks several years ago, which is the same thing that Steve sells except that you can actually GET them (Indiana Music doesn't make 'em anymore), they were $75. Yes, it's steep but it's the best mute rack I've ever had and well worth the $60+ Steve is peddling his for.

The Manhassett trumpet mute-holder got 2 lukewarm reviews on Amazon.
The price for the Trombone one on ebay isn't bad - $21 including shipping.
I'll think about it. Thanks.

Dillon Music - much better price:

The Manhasset ones get in the way of page turns, I've found. I have one of the very last racks sold by Indiana Music. He sold a handful to a waiting list a couple years ago and I got one. I also have one from Muteholder.net, called Floor-no-More, which is actually my favorite because you screw the clamp onto the stand. It has plastic rings that are very sturdy. Unfortunately, Muteholder seems to have taken down their site.

The Horntrader version is very nice, but it has a big 'jumper cable' clamp that has its limitations. If you have to clamp it onto the inner part of the stand (say, if you're up on a riser and the stand is on the floor, so you have to extend the stand to get it up high), then you have to stick little segments of rubber hose over the clamp to make it grab onto the stand.

The Silent Mute Tray looks pretty nifty, though.

Regarding the issue of clamping onto a flimsy music stand, you can always bring a mic stand and clamp it onto that. That works if you're using big band 'box' stands, too.

If I had to buy one these days, I'd get the Horntrader or Silent Tray. Actually, I'd buy two and put one in the closet. The good ones don't seem to stick around forever, so get a good one while you can!

I used a file and smoothed down the side of the mute holder's fork that music would catch on - it's now more of a "ramp" than an edge. Fixed that problem.

what I really like about the Indiana Mute Rack, now being sold by Horntrader.com is the fact that it folds up and will fit in my case, sets up in seconds and will attatch to a chair leg, Manhassett type of stand or the portable Hamilton trumpet stand that I used for years. 60.00 is certainly a fair market value in my opinion!

I'm going to provide some pics of the one from Muteholder.net so you can see what it is (last one has the Indiana Music one next to it folded up):

The contact info I have reads as follows:

A bit of googling and I found a website for his machine shop:

Email: customerservice@jrwilliamsco.com

I know he may be living at least part time in AZ. Maybe he's got some extras laying around. If you see a used one for sale, get it!

We just got the Hercules HA100 in the store this week. I have not gotten a chance to use it however it does seem fairly heavy duty for a mute holder and at a fair price.

I have a few holders. The one I use all the time is the first one recommended here.

They all have some problem. Some of them only work on a wire stand because the clamp is too small. Some you can't use on the big band stands the the band has and makes you use. The first one on the thread doesn't have any of those problems. I haven't had a time where I couldn't use it.

The one problem I've had is when I have to change quickly, the corks hit the wire ring. Too much hitting the ring damages the corks.

When I used to play in a big band with those BB stands, I used a Hamilton trumpet stand, removed the rubber base and clamped my stand onto it, worked really well for me, or the chair leg.

I like the mute Holders Doug Teeter made and stock them at the shop. They are great and attach to any standard stand. They come in really handy on one swing band gig when I have to switch mutes in often 3 beats.

Not as bad as Beauty and the Beast, but close!

Trent,

is there a direct link to that product? I click on your store site and nothing comes up about mutes / accessories. granted, I'm doing this from an iPhone, but I can't find anything about the Teeter rack you describe.
