I've started thinking about getting a microphone to start recording myself and am having a hard time deciding what to go with. Part of the problem is that I can read all of the recomendations, but I have no idea what these setups actually SOUND like.

So, I was hoping to start a thread to let people post their recordings and describe what sort of a setup they used.

I'll start. Just fooling around the other night having recently picked up the trumpet again. If you want to hear some bad trumpet playing, listen in :p

Macbook Air mic, live, medium sized room, ~6 feet away. Selmer Radial + Curry 3TC.

I checked it out. Sounded good. You'll find that depending on how much room ambience you want, placing yourself closer to the mic can help the balance. However, if you can't control the level of the input (like with some video cameras, etc.) it becomes easy to overpower the mic and you'll end up with a distorted sound.

If you dig around, there has been a pretty good amount of recording technique discussed here on TH lately.

Here's a humble example of my set-up I recorded for Mardi Gras:

I used a Royer R-122 (Arturo's favorite mic) for the trumpet and tambourine tracks, going directly into a Tascam DP-008. Sometimes I'll use a tube pre-amp and other times, an LDC mic, like the Neumann TLM103. You can also get really good results with some of the cheaper Chinese-made ribbon mics. I've used a Nady RSWM-5 quite a bit with really good results.

Oh, here's a photo too. LOL!
