I just saw a post on TM that brought up something I've wondered about. The guy mentioned a modified version of the CG breathing, but where he took a quick breath in - as we do when we play...

So, why DO we breath in for the same amount of counts that we breath out? It seems like good training for the musculature, but not so good for building a habit for breathing when playing . . .?

Breathing in slowly, just like practicing a valve pattern slowly, allows us time to think about what we're doing and learn from the experience. In the case of breathing, it allows us time to think about the need to stay relaxed as we fill up and to keep our chests in a position of good posture.

It's similar to the idea of deep breathing in yoga. Taking a nice, full, relaxed breath doesn't need to involve speed. In fact, as with a yawn (the perfect full breath), keeping speed out of the equation should help keep unwanted tension out of the situation.

Best wishes,

John Mohan
