Hey y'all. Thought this might be an interesting topic. I started out using a 7C, then I bought a 12C and used that for a while (couldn't get much tone out of it, just used it for higher notes-bad decision on my part!). Now I use a 1 1/2C, and occasionally a 3C (all of them are Bachs, I haven't tried anything else other than a Monette B2 once). I use these because I can get a much better tone out of them then the others. What have you used, and what do you use now?!

I use a 11B4 (yamaha standard series), a bit small and all, but i guess i am fine. THe bach equivelent is a 7DW (7 size rim, semi-shallow cup, and a wide cushion rim).

Bach 3C on Bb trumpet (or sometimes Schilke 8A4 on lead).
Bach 6 on Bb cornet.
Bach 6 on C trumpet.
Callet SOLO on flugelhorn.
Modified Schilke 8A4 on Civil War cornet.

I'm trying this mouthpiece, but I think it's too big!

I started on a 7C. In college switched to a Jet-Tone? Then to a Bach 1 1/4C. Made my way to a Callet 15S and finally have settled on a Curry 5BC and the Curry 5C, 5M, and 5XS.

I started with a 7C, was "switched" to a 3C in middle school, played a Holton Galaxy (which is disputed over size wise; I've been told it's like a 3C, and I've been told it's like a 7C) freshman year, an Allen Vizzutti sig. Yamaha the next year, a Marcinkiewicz 14 for a while, and then finally a Marcinkiewicz 11 this year.

Moral of the story... don't blindly follow your director's rules (the 3C craze..), especially if he is a woodwind player, and also don't stupidly buy a shallow mouthpiece as a high school underclassman (or even vice versa...something too big). Get help finding something that fits you, is beneficial to your playing, and of course something that wisely fits your experience and chops!

Started out on a Yamaha 14B4 - 3C equivilent, moved to a 5C pretty quick. Now after doing BE for a few months its feeling a tad big so might be heading 7C - 10 1/2C direction.

??

You mean, you're supposed to play on just one??

High School- Bach 7C through 9th grade, then Bach 5A for symphonic, 10 1/2 C for marching/pep band.

College- Schilke 15C4C on trumpet, Schilke 40D for trombone

Beginning comeback- Mt. Vernon 7, then 5C, then Schilke 11B4, then Bach 12C, then Stork SM10XM, then ...whocares??

Today, I play primarily the Warburton 8 series tops, from 8S to 8BC, although some of the vintage trumpets just play better with a mouthpiece manufactured by the same company during the same timeframe the instument was manufactured.

What prompted the switch from your Laskeys?

I use what's in my signature, but typically it's just the Curry 3C and the Shew.

Mainly, a Schilke 18C3d and 11A.

Also have a Bach 3C, Blessing 5C, 30 year old Yamaha 11, a Conn 6C cornet mouthpiece (for my invisible cornet). Started on a 7C about 10 years ago.

I've played on some other stuff, the Schilkes seem to fit me pretty well so far. I've contacted them about getting an 18A custom made, as well.

Bach 3C, although recently I have been having unusually good success with a 7C as well. I will continue to work with both for the foreseeable future.

All that way from a Bach 1 1/4C many, many years ago.

But, I play with a somewhat different embouchure technique - more focused and efficient, and with less motion than in the past. Maybe I'm using a sort of BE and don't really realize it. Whatever it is, it certainly is better than in the past.

Let's see. My mpc history goes like this

Classical:
Started on Bach 7C, then to 5C, then 3C, 10 1/2C, back to 3C, 2C, Monette B6, back to Bach 2C, then 1 1/2C, a 1X for while, GR65L, back to 3C, now I bounce around from the GR65L, 3C, Curry 3ZM, and Curry 2BC.

Jazz/Lead:
Bach 10 1/2C, 5C, Monette B6, Bach 3C, Claude Gordon 3(CG3), Marcinkiewicz Bobby Shew 1.5, then to Shew 1.25, now I'm testing again between a GR65Z** and a Curry 3Z.

I think you can figure out I'm a mpc junkie, but hey, if Doc can do it, so can I!!!!

My name is Perry, and I am a recovering mouthpiece junkie. I have at one time or another owned the following (this is all that I can remember, but have owned MANY more, some listed I have owned numerous incarnations of):
Bach: 3C(at least 10 regular weight and 2 megatone),3D,3F,3,3B,5B,7C,7B,7D,7DW,7E,7EW,10 1/2C, 6C,6B,6BM, 1,1C,1X,1 1/4C, 1/2B, 1 1/2C, 1 1/2C 24/Schmidt, 2C
Denis Wick: 1C, 1CW
Warburton: 3MC, 4SV, 4MC, 5S, 5M
Reeves: 42S, 43S, 43ES, 40M, 41S pic
Jet-Tone: T1A
Greg Black: NY3
Monette: B1-1, B4L, B4S, B4, C4, B5L
Giardinelli: 3S
Conn: No designation, felt like a 7B
GR: 67L, 67LX, 67MX, 66Z*, 64P
Marcinkiewicz: Shew 1.25, C. Findley, Rick Baptist, 5/3C
Purviance: 8A, 9
Stork: 2C, 2P, 2B, 1.5C, 1.5B, 3B
Curry: 3BC, 1BC, 3B, 3C, 5BC, 3TF
Yamaha: 16C4, Mark Gould, Bobby Shew, Canadian Brass R, 6A4a
Laskey: 80C, 50C, 50B, 50S, 50ES
numerous custom jobs

I now only play on the mouthpieces listed in my signature. I found what fits me, and stopped trying to play mouthpieces that were the "things to play" just because other great players played on them. I found that big rims just didn't fit me, and that there was nothing macho or impressive about playing a certain mouthpiece. What's impressive is what you can do on it. I'll get off of my soapbox and get back in the woodshed.
