I currently am playing on the stock Getzen 3C which came with my Getzen Eterna flugel. I play a Schilke 17 on trumpet and would like something close to that for flugel. Can anyone recommend a good 1c/17 sized standard shank flugel mouthpiece?
Thanks

Contact Flip Oakes about one of his flugel mpcs. I have used both the WT and Extreme on a Getzen 4V. They really make the horn sing. Beautiful deep resonance.

Curry 1FL or 1FLD should be great! Make sure you get the correct taper for your horn.

Yes the Curry are fine: they have a very smoky, dusty sound!

With a dark and warm sounding flugel the FL cup will be enough and the FLD about useless, but if your flugel has a lighter sound better go for the FLD, or both the FL and FLD.

Actually, I'm in love with my Curry FLJ, but it does not seem that it is available yet.

Monette, Warburton and GR make some fantastic flugel pieces. Depends on your budget.

Mark makes four flugel cups now: FLM, FLJ, FL, and FLD. He hasn't made the FLJ available to the public on his website, but I'm sure he'd make one for you if you wanted.

I think it's just as deep as the FL cup, but a different shape. I had to get used to backing off of it, and then it out played any flugel mouthpiece I've ever tried!

Mark is the one who could explain what's different about it.

Here's a pic comparing the four different flugel cups:

Thanks Joe. I really like my 2FL but at times feel like it's too deep or open. Since I switched to Curry 3. rim on trumpet mpces I thought I might try a different depth cup in a 3. rim, maybe the 3FLJ.

Actually, the FLJ (jazz) cups could be available as soon as the first part of 2012.

Technically, they are an adaptation of the Old Giardinelli FL cups, nearly as deep as my FL cups, but with a much more relaxed "S" shape to the cup compared to the FL cup.

So- cup depth WithOut all the cup Volume.

This means you can achieve a pretty dark flugel sound without having to think about loading up on air to play it properly.

Probably not enough volume to work in a brass band setting, but plenty of sound for big band and combo work. I have our Reno Jazz Orchestra section on the J cups. They all comment on how easy they are to play.

Backing off the air is key to playing the J cup- it took me a few days to get used to "loading up" on air every time I picked up my flugel. YMMV

Now I don't even think of that at all.

I love my Warburton FL and FLX, but Curry and Wild Thing would be good choices as well. There are a lot of great mouthpiece makers, thanks goodness!

I've had great luck with Stork, a 5FL and 2FL in particular. Deep V-cup with a much different sound than a traditional Bach-style flugel piece. Rims are a bit different, but comfortable.

Very interesting. Since i play on an old vintage Giardinelli flugel mp i will order one as soon as it will become available. Can't wait!
Thanks for your excellent work Mr Curry

I use to play an Eterna and never succeeded in finding a mouthpiece that made it sound the way I wanted. Even went to Bob Reeves and neither Bob nor I thought his very highly regarded pieces helped my sound with that particular horn. I ended up buying a Yamaha instead and am still trying to find the right mouthpiece.

I have a Getzen Custom Flugelhorn and didn't like the Getzen 3C mouthpiece that came with it and purchased a Kanstul C.G. Personal F while I wait for a Monette 6B flugelhorn mouthpiece.
