I'm interested in hearing anything about microphones you all use in any setup.

My goal is mostly some live feedback with some headphones with play-a-long tracks. I often warm-up with even some TV through headphones to pass the time through the rote exercises. Occasionally I might record some things for giggles, nothing intended for production or giggles. I have a small Mackie mixing board and Tascam DP-004. For microphones I have access to Shure 58/57's which I know are a staple, but don't know what to look at if another mic might have a more brass friendly frequency response and my knowledge is limited in audio beyond it's practical use.

My feelings are that's more than adequate, but maybe there's something simple to get that would be better. Also maybe a clip-on bell format that won't cost an arm and leg that would give me some utility someday if I'm at a gig and don't want to point my bell at the mic all the time?

Where you positioning your mics? I suggest to the side of your bell instead of straight on would be helpful. You seem to be pretty well set, otherwise.

You could purchase either a ribbon mic - if the 8 pattern isn't a problem for you, ie: if the place where you plan to make your recordings has a good acoustic also in front of you -, or a condenser mic.
Both are good for brass, but condenser mics are much more easy to use due to their usually cardioid / hypercardioid pattern.

I own an Apex 435 condenser mic, which is a very good mic and a great value for its relatively small price: about $100 only.

A good clip-in-bell mic is usually much more expensive!

Why spend money if you don't need to? Try the SM57 (first choice over the 58 ), and see if you like the results. Play around with mic placement before you give up and move on.

Don't buy a cheap clip-on. They are TERRIBLE. If you're going to bother, plan to spend several hundred dollars.

VetPsychWars, noted. I haven't really set anything up yet. I was hoping for any advice before "reinventing the wheel" or "shooting in the dark" if anything would be glaringly inadequate.

Thanks all, so far you've given me some things to think about and I'll start playing around. Mostly I'm exploring this as a way to get some better feedback. I find playing with speakers in a smaller environment to be very difficult and I do have neighbors that me simply playing with a mic and headphones would be much appreciated over me + a speaker setup.

The sm57 and sm58 are the same mic, just
a different screw-on top.

I've tested on the same equipment and the same day a sm 57, a sm 58, an Apex 435, and another condenser mic but I don't recall which one.
The Apex won hands down: much more depth of sound, a warmer and really more detailed sound.

May or may not be so great for your purposes, but the Zoom H4n's are great for recording practice sessions and stuff. You can plug headphones into it too for live feedback, or you can plug it up to your computer to use as an interface. You can plug other microphones into it too, it's a nifty little device.

And you can record concerts and gigs
