I am playing some Bartok Excerpts for a Master Class with Susan Slaughter in a few weeks. I have the excerpts from a book, but my teacher suggested I get a hold of a full trumpet part. Does anyone have a pdf they could let me use for it? No copyright infringement intended, and no profit will come from it, no worries. Purely educational. _________________ XO Brass 1600i - Curry 5M

While I do not agree with the way things are, what you are doing is still copyright infringement and illegal. The issues isn't you making profit, but possible denying the copyright holder a sale by obtaining a non-legal copy. I certainly have more than a few such parts, as does I imagine everyone else here does, but do not mistakenly think that it is legal to do so.
There is a nearly complete, and legal, copy of the part of the Rob Roy McGregor's Audition and Performance Prep book, Vol. 3. |

Ya, I was thinking I may end up having to go that route. I found it before and saw the public domain issue. It's apparently public domain in Canada... _________________ XO Brass 1600i - Curry 5M

While I am not for breaking copyright law either, how does one get a hold of a single part that is rental only? I'll tell you - you get a copy from someone, for yourself and for educational purposes only. Jumping down someone's throat on TH, telling them how wrong it is, is barking up the wrong tree IMHO. Learning through trading parts has been done for generations and will most likely continue to be done in the future. Not being able to discuss it on the TH will not change that.
Ever try getting a single part from Boosey and Hawkes? You can't.... renting the entire set of parts is the only way, and I'm not even sure they'll let you do that as an individual. By getting parts through Rob Roy, I'm not so sure Boosey and Hawkes or the Bartok estate is getting any money either. In other words, there is no money gained or lost to the Bartok estate at any point. I'd be curious how RRM does it? How does his agreement work?
I also realize that getting a score and copying out the entire part could also be done... but then what do you have? A copy of the part. |

After I posted, I realize that I jumped down your throat... didn't mean to. I do have an idea, however. Why not get both parts? Get a copy of the original rental part and the RRM book. That way you have spent the money where it needs to be spent, but also have the visual of the original so you can learn and be prepared for future performances.
I still maintain, however, that getting single rental parts for study is not as bad as people make it out to be. Now, got to get back to ordering more music from Balquhidder for myself. |

You can go to the Boosey and Hawkes website and browse through a large number of their collection of scores.
http://www.boosey.com/cr/perusals/browse.asp?site-lang=en
You do need to create an account, but it is free, and you can look at (and copy the trumpet parts) a great collection of music.
Unfortunately, they don't offer up their complete collection (including the Bartok Concerto), but there are tons of other great pieces there. Lots of Copland, Bernstein, Adams (including the complete DR Atomic opera, and the Dr Atomic Symphony).
Its a great resource, and I'm sure that they are well aware that there will be some folks copying parts from it. |

How does one save (or even view) just the trumpet parts? _________________ RJM

I'm going to assume you are referring to the Boosey link I put up right above your post.
You can't view the individual parts. It's just the complete scores. And you can't save or download them. You need to hand copy (or if you are so inclined, make a part in Finale). Back in the olden days, that's what we'd do, get a score and copy out the trumpet parts by hand. With pencils. It's a great way to learn a part.
If you are referring to the IMSLP page, there is usually an option to view and save the individual parts. |

I did, indeed, mean the B&H page. IMSLP is a pretty neat site I've played with for a while. Thanks for this new resource! _________________ RJM
