What's not to like? Great sound, facility and passion!

....I just don't happen to be able to understand it.

It's as if I were listening to Jesus give his Sermon on the Mount in the original Aramaic. I know I'm hearing something meaningful and special, but I just don't have the skill to comprehend it. Too bad for me.

I'm struggling with high-school algebra and he's talking Einstein string theory.

Here's something else I like (really!)......

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVpjIJ8a9cA

....but don't understand.

He's really getting a Miles sound. I notice a Heim mouthpiece.

Music is about creating an emotion. If this gives you an emotional moment then that is it you and the player win. How would we survive if everyone that listend to us understood us?

I definitely felt emotion when listening to this. Maybe like that felt by an illiterate medieval peasant when listening to a Latin Catholic mass with lots of Gregorian chants.

Beautiful and awesome. Intimidating.

Wow. I may not have "understood" it but I do know that what I just viewed was pure awesomeness. His command of the horn is just fantastic. A true talent.

I believe that's a weight. or a dampening device.

That's one of those "bell over bell" designed Courtois horns if I'm not mistaken.

I can tell he's a monster player, but it's not really my cup of tea. Still, I can appreciate the talent.

Wow hanklnsmd,

That is some intense playing. There were moments that I thought were very interesting. I like catsup on my fries not ranch so I don't know if I am qualified to convince the angry masses that music must evolve and to do so it will stretch the know boundaries of acceptance.

Jon,
Just to clarify, that wasn't me playing in those videos. I just thought your perspective was relevant to music, in general.
Kudos,
Mike

I remember when he played with Stan Kenton ... still one of my favorite jazz players. Be sure to check out jazz trumpet player Thomas Marriott also.
