Ryan Beach was the only one who advanced to finals, but they are bringing in some other people to play in a final round.

If memory serves here is the semi list:
Haydn 2nd half of 2nd mvt.
Academic Festival chorale
Pictures opening
Mahler 5 opening and lyrical
Petrushka all three excerpts
Outdoor Overture
Bartok - last movement
Pines - 1st movement stuff

Seems like I'm missing one - can't remember.

I didn't take the audition, but a couple buddies of mine did. I believe the first round was something along the lines of promenade, pines off stage, ballerina dance, reh 155-158 from petrouchka, the multiple tonguing licks from the 4th mvt of scheherezade, and lastly m. 211-251 from the last mvt of Bartok concerto. Don't know what was in semis, but obviously no curveballs thrown in the first round.

Apparently they have almost $14 million in outstanding debt. I wonder how much longer until they go out of business?

Sometimes I wonder why so many people even try to get these jobs. It won't be long until people start to wise up and the musical performance standard in this country plummets and then disappears.

There will always be good music around, it just won't be as well paid.

I realize this is a classical trumpet forum, but like life, none of these events happen in a vacuum. It's not just classical music that is struggling for funding. NASA is struggling with funding too. The concept of NASA struggling is a little bit more startling to me because during the 60's and 70's, developments in space exploration brought about improvements in GDP and quality of life. I think one of the over riding problems in society is that we are intellectually lazier than ever. Less science is being performed in the United States than other nations, and classical music interest has fallen in correlation. It is a common trend that many people of higher intellectual capacity are avid fans and enthusiasts of the high arts (Steven Pinker, Richard Dawkins et al.) I know correlation does not equal causation, but as I ponder these threads and my thoughts about the place of "classical" music in society, it is curious that these two trends coincide. FWIW, I believe Chris Martin had a picture on his facebook of an astronaut and I think he wrote a caption something a long the lines of "this is what I what I would be doing if I was a little smarter and a little more talented."

Here is Neil DeGrasse Tyson talking about the decline in science in the United States: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXIR9ve0JU0

and pleading to senate committe about NASA: http://www.youtube.com/watch?&v=rmKlA_UnX8c#t=35s

So optimistic.

I'm currently doing literally everything I can to win this job, and if I do I plan on bringing a non-stop work ethic and an unreachable standard to an already great orchestra with the hopes that the standard for the orchestra will continue to rise and audiences will always feel something from the performance. Some would say that naive or overly optimistic, but I would say what's the point if you dont think like that? The standard plummets because people give in and say "This sucks, why try?" If people just thought "Why does this suck and what can I do to directly affect the situation in an immediate and positive way?", maybe things would be better. I respect your opinion, and am in no way intending to offend you. But if you dont want to be part of any sort of solution, then move out of the way of people who do.

I am glad that those two are enthusiasts of the high arts but they are both fools.

Would you care to explain why you think the professor of psychology at Harvard and professor emeritus of Oxford (respectively) are fools? I imagine whatever feeble attempt you have for rationalizing your ill and misinformed opinion will be extremely entertaining, so I'll hang up and listen...
