This is as much about my first effort to record myself with my new Zoom H2 and posting it to You Tube as it is showing where I am range wise.
I recently had a breakthrough in range, then a struggle with almost passing out. That is all fixed now, thanks to several who stepped in and helped me. Here is where I am at now. I actually played this solo at a gig last week. This clip is just me by myself in my garage.

Here is one where I am trying to play more lyrically and am not as comfortable:

Nice sound! I've wanted a digital recorder for a long time but keep putting it off
What facilitated your "break through?" And why the heck were you in the passing out zoon?? _________________ Larry Pfeifer |

<3 brass machine.
Nice G too; didn't sound like you were struggling for it at all. _________________ Stomvi VRII Lightweight in Silver

| AH, brings back memories. We played this my Junior year in HS marching band. Lots of fun stuff in that year's show, and lots of solos for me....no G though. Good job. |

My breakthrough came after finally figuring out how to do the high tongue arch, the "iiihhh" or "hhiiss" position. Pops told me about this 8 or 9 years ago, but it took a while for me to be able to use it. For me, the tongue feels like it's arched at the back, though actually the whole tongue is arched.
The starting to pass out occurred when I took in way too much air and had poor posture. We don't need lots of air for high notes. More important to avoiding passing out is for me to keep my back straight, shoulders back, and head slightly raised.
BTW, last Friday I had a lesson with Roger Ingram, and though the main focus of the lesson was not on range, his approach--as described in his book--is unlocking range above High G for me. It will take a short while before that range is ready for gigs, but I now have a clear path forward. His approach also makes my current range easier.
I set my H2 on the front mic and set the gain at the lowest level. Then I backed up 10 feet before playing toward the mic. _________________ Blaine
