No. 1 sounded the most even in tone and intonation. No. 2 sounded like G above the staff wants to pull sharp, one of my "throw it out" cues. No. 3 sound all over the map; if YOU are having trouble controlling it, what about mere mortals?!

There is one reason that I practice: to be ready at the downbeat when the final trumpet sounds. |

I think you sound really good on all three---not a bad choice in the bunch. I voted for tpt 1. Hard to describe, it just sounded like a more compact sound with a nice balance of core and shine. Tpt 2 sounded looser, and tpt 3 sounded more open. I bet I could listen again tomorrow and choose differently. (I should add that I just finished practicing out of the Werner book, which might have influenced my choice.)
Hope you have fun at your gig tonight! _________________ Bb Yamaha Xeno 8335IIS

FWIW I thought 3 sounded good....if it sounds good on a cell phone it will sound great on a gig. What have you chosen and what horns are they....?

Missing some information aren't we.
Like: what's the gig, 3rd trumpet in an orchestra or lead with a salsa band? big room or small? blues or Sousa? Maynard covers or Miles?

# 1 sounds as it was Clark Terry behind the horn on Stardust

For my ear, that makes it #1. It has the most complete, stand alone sound.

Fun to listen! I seem to have a little different take on the three horns, compared to what the others hear.
To me:
Horn 1 lacks the nice core that I hear from the other two.
Horn 2 has a fine, solid core to me. This would be my vote based on sound alone.
Horn 3 has nearly the core of Horn 2, just not quite as much. More importantly, this horn sounds like it's an old friend in your hands. There's a sense of familiarity and ease with this one, at least to me. I would always pick the old friend... |

Seeing as how your original post said "tonight" and that you live in time zone 3 hours ahead of me, I'm assuming that you've already played your gig. Regardless, I liked horn #2 the best. It sounded clearer than the others. |

Imagine how great you would've sounded on a Scodwell USA. Kidding of course Trent. You always sound fabulous on anything.

Interesting how we "hear" things differently..number one sounded tame (smooth jazz) to me and the overtones a bit thin on number two. Of course I am splitting hairs .....they are all great horns....a Bundy, an Ambassador and a Yamaha 1335 in no particular order...it was a rough gig.... Out of fun I would love to hear a sample of lead salsa and orchestral on the "real" horns in your poll. Always enjoy them Trent.

Truly fascinating… Begs a request for a new comparative video…. Adams A1 versus Adams A4 with Shepherd crook… Using a few different MPs, ranging from CS down to a deep bowl and deep V cup.
