|
|
Currently I play a Bach 7DW mpc on trumpet.
I've just bought a Couesnon flugel and I'm unsure of what flugel mouthpiece I should go to!? I've read that most players try to find a mouthpiece that most closely resembles their trumpet rim?
This is my first flugel, so I'm note sure how to decide?
Any info would be appreciated!
cheers,

| The rim is what folks try to get the same, not the cup. So you'd want to check out a 7BFL or 7CFL. Anything shallower will kill the fluffy quality of your flugel. Start with 7BFL, and if you can't make it work, try the C cup. Flugel cups are supposed to be deep, but don't let that scare you... after all you're not playing lead trumpet stuff on a flugel. |

Ignoring the cup what you'll likely want is a rim similar to the 7W wich obviously is a relatively wide rim. To my lips the stock Reeves rim, maybe a 42 would feel about right. If the stock 42 rim doesn't suit you he can always cut a 7DW trumpet piece and thread it onto one of his underparts. I'd call Reeves and double check about the rim size/shape and be sure to address the shank needed since the Couesnon isn't the most common taper. Also in my limited experience you'll problably want the deepest cup and most open backbore Reeves offers.
Both Curry and Kanstul likely offer similar options. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

Forgot to mention, since this is your first flugel, you may want to stick with a stock Bach (or Yamaha) mouthpieces for $30 a pop until you've been playing it for at least 6 months so you can figure out what works and what doesn't before you jump down the rabbit hole with more expensive gear and the dizzying array of options. When you get your "sea legs" on flugel, you'll be better equipped to make decisions on custom, modular, or expensive (GR/Monette/etc) mouthpieces.
There are lots of inexpensive used mouthpieces in the marketplace section on this site... |

With your Couesnon you need a French taper shank. If I were you, I'd be looking for used French taper pieces with the rims "in the ballpark" of your 7DW trumpet. That would be Warburton 5 or 6, Stork 4 or 5, Curry 7, Schilke 11 or 12 (with the 4 rim ie. 12F4), Reeves 41 or 42 etc.
You could pick up a sacrificial 7DW and have the rim threaded by any of the custom makers. Mark Curry has digital scans of lots of mouthpieces. If he has yours he could wed your rim to his excellent flugel cup with the French shank.
PM me, I may have something for you in a .660"ID with a Purviance style rim. |
