I'm taking the summer to get back into good playing shape since I am starting back to college this coming fall to finish a music degree. I have a pretty decent library will the usual books for fundamentals ( Irons, Clarke, Arban, Schlossberg). Is there anything else you guys think I should pick up? I have thought about possilbly getting the Sachs Daily Fundamentals book.

I'd recommend adding the Charlier book(s).

I forgot to add that I also have etude books like the Charlier, Bousquet, Brandt and Sachse. I'm definitely open to ideas as to how to organize practice time to be more efficient.

If it were me, I'd also pick up some orchestral excerpts and some new solo repertoire pieces to keep from getting bored. I can only stand the studies for so long (maybe 15 minutes at a time), but can extend each of my practice sessions greatly if I look forward to the piece I let myself play after the studies. Bonus points if you find repertoire you've never heard before, boosting your sight-reading skills. Maybe transpose them on a different trumpet as well.

I also keep a bunch of great books in stock and ready to ship.

My niche is Claude Gordon and Herbert L. Clarke's approach.
Contact me directly if I can be of any help.

I'd second spending time on solo lit, especially the area of 20th Century to current. If ever there are lessons to be learned about what one needs to be able to do in this world to play the trumpet, it'll be found there.

The past few summers have been my time to really practice and improve rather than just maintain. (I've been hacking at this thing constantly since 1962...) Fishing hasn't been so great on the lake and there's only so much golf and "yard work" one can do, so I've created a studio out of one of the cabins and have been spending 2-4 hours or more daily just playing and experimenting. I'm looking forward to it already, picking up new (or new to me) works and recently-released method books to go through. Too many things during the regular year with all the jobs to partition the time in this manner, during summer it's much better for me than watching TV.

Another bit of advice: were I starting up again after a long hiatus, I'd set a goal of going beyond that point at which I could once play, not just "get back to it". I always marvel at how well I can still play just in the maintenance mode even as I approach the 6 decade mark. Were we athletes we'd have been, for all practical purposes, finished with our craft 30 years ago. So far, nothing really has stood in the way of me being as good now as I ever have been except myself. Good luck with your endeavor!

To prepare for music college during the summer months, how about 13 weeks with the teacher of your choice either in person or on Skype?
