My copy also arrived this morning:

While I have only begun to look over it, this seems to be the most comprehensive and impressive excerpt book ever published. In addition to the normal ones you would expect, there are extensive passages of less common pieces, it seems that everything you would ever need is here in one book. The type set, pages turns, etc...and overall layout is the best of any excerpt book I have seen as well, and that is not even taking into account the extensive text by Mr. Sachs.

The CD recording quality is fantastic, and while not every passages was recorded, all the ones you will want to hear are on there, with 67 different passages on the CD. Amazing!

There are over 90 excerpts that Michael presents and comments upon and the CD has over 60 of these excerpts that he recorded - over only two days!

Not too shabby, eh?

This is a remarkable book filled with orchestral excerpts--some I've never seen before (Adams - Doctor Atomic and The Wound Dresser, for instance). In addition to the musical parts, the author adds extended commentary and suggestions on ways to approach playing them. It's the passing along of professional "insider" information that comes not from reading the music on the page but rather from the various traditions of playing the music. He offers thoughts on mute selection and strategies on which trumpet (C, D, Eb, Pic) choices offer efficiencies.

He talks about how certain excerpts need to be understood by looking at all three trumpet parts or by listening to the woodwinds before your entrance. Playing off stage? Playing at a slightly higher pitch will sound in tune when the sound reaches the stage. (Noted.)

He revisits how different conductors requested variations in tempos. Some of the excerpts are quite brief however the extended commentary about those brief notes is often eyeopening. He offers ideas on practicing specific elements and what to listen to before entrances.

I'm also impressed by the writer's attitude toward his choices. He seems open to all sorts of variations. He talks about constantly trying different horn choices before settling into his final choice during rehearsals. You can see that nothing is locked in stone. That orchestral playing is always in transition. It's like taking a series of lessons with a master player who says, well, here's how it really should be played but you can also try this or that. If you're interested in the orchestral repertoire, you will want this book.

Just got my copy in the mail. While my auditioning days are in the past I'm finding this book to be far more useful than just another audition prep tool. Lots of great insight as to how the best musicians think about preparation and performing music. While the excerpts are the vehicle, the commentary is much further reaching and can be applied to all music. I'm procrastinating listening to the CD. I don't want to get discouraged or PO'd that someone can play so well.

I just got my copy, it is a great book I started reading it and Michael Sachs words are just what a trumpet player needs to know about trumpet playing, at least that reminded me to work on the fundamentals again. I really like the comments on almost every excerpt plus the CD is just amazing, he sounds really impressive.

Wow, can't believe I never heard of this until now. I noticed that he has a list of errata concerning mistakes in the book. Does anyone know if there is a newer edition with the mistakes corrected?

I JUST finally got the book. Amazing.
I torment my family daily with the cd:). Since the wife is a trumpet player too..she doesn't mind so much. She just hates it when I listen to Alison Balsom.

Thanks for all of the nice comments here…..

With any new publication there are bound to be a few small things that slip through the cracks in the first edition. Please visit the website I’ve set up for my book (www.TheOrchestralTrumpet.com) in order to download an errata sheet listing all mistakes we’ve found, as well as a link to download all corrected pages for everything listed there. These errata pages will update the book and correct the few small issues that we discovered. As we find any further issues I will continue to update this site, so please check in periodically for any additional updates.

For anyone interested, this can be purchased through my website (www.MichaelSachs.com), and Rob Roy McGregor at Balquhidder Music (http://www.balquhiddermusic.com/MS1001.htm).

Starting recently this is also available through Hickey’s Music Online (www.hickeys.com/products/092/sku92908.htm), and in Europe through Spaeth/Schmid Music (http://www.spaeth-schmid.de/shop/index.php/cat/c100001_Trumpet.html) as well as June Emerson Music in the UK (http://www.juneemerson.co.uk/index.aspx).

I hope you all continue to enjoy the book and CD!

With warmest regards,
Michael

This is simply the best excerpt book EVER published! There are a few small mistakes that Mr. Sachs has deftly resolved. However, the genius in the book doesn't lie in the accuracy of the printed scores but, rather, in the commentary and the insight Mr. Sachs so generously shares. I was fortunate enough to study with Mr. Sachs for several years and this book is like taking several years of private lessons with one of the greatest masters of orchestra trumpet playing in the world today (actually, ever!). The fact that this book is priced where it is, including a CD of Mr. Sachs playing, is almost laughable. I love Mike, but he is getting ripped off, and you are getting a treasure trove of information. RUN, don't walk to buy this volume!!!

It's a great library edition for the professional/teacher.
Are there any opinions out there of his Mahler books?
Thanks.

Thanks again for all of the nice comments here and for all of the support for this project over the past year. With the incredible help of Rob Roy McGregor, and my students who are expert proofreaders, I am very happy to announce the release of the 2nd Edition of The Orchestral Trumpet. We went through this thoroughly and made any adjustments necessary and upgraded this entire book. The CD remains the same and the price is the same as well ($39.95).

For anyone interested, this can be purchased through my website (www.MichaelSachs.com), Rob Roy McGregor at Balquhidder Music (http://www.balquhiddermusic.com/MS1001.htm), Hickey’s Music Online (http://www.hickeys.com/products/092/sku92908.htm), and in Europe at Spaeth/Schmid Music (http://www.spaeth-schmid.de/shop/product_info.php/info/p110951_SACHS-Michael---The-Orchestral-Trumpet.html) and June Emerson Music in the UK (http://www.juneemerson.co.uk/index.aspx).

One of the people I dedicated this book to is David Zauder, the fantastic longtime 2nd Trumpet and Principal Cornet of The Cleveland Orchestra who passed away just a few days ago. Sitting next to DZ in the section was a daily lesson on professionalism, dedication, integrity, respect, and artistry. So much of his spirit is within me and hopefully transmitted through this book. In our last conversation just a couple of weeks ago, I was telling him about this imminent second printing and he was admonishing me (jokingly) for giving away too much!! He loved the trumpet and he loved music....he was an extraordinary person.

I hope you all continue to enjoy this.......

With warmest regards,
Michael

For those of us that bought the first edition, is there a way to obtain errata lists (or updated pages) with the corrections you mention to bring a first edition up to match the 2nd?
