I'm looking for some help locating music for a youth brass quintet. They don't want to deal with anything other than Bb trumpets (no C, Picc, or other keyed parts).

Probably a good idea to not have too much as far as range requirements either, say high C and below.

Music that a reasonably advanced group of middle school or high school players could handle competently. Yet, not "Mary had a little lamb" stuff either.

If there are any "kick start" style collections that would appropriate for a group like that, I'd like to know what they are. Preferably something that wouldn't break their wallets getting started as well.

edit: (I'm assuming a brass quintet of two trumpets in Bb, Horn in F, Trombone and Tuba or was the question about a group of 5 Bb trumpets?)

The Canadian Brass series of books from Halleonard?

I also like the gig-ready sets from ArtofSoundMusic.com (I've played the two holiday/christmas sets).

You're right, I could have been more clear though.

I sort of skipped over the Canadian Brass publications when I first saw them on another site without looking very closely. I thought of their album content, and immediately guessed they would be too difficult, and contain picc parts and the like. I missed the "easy" and "beginning" designations. Thank you very much for those, they sound like they would fit the bill.

The other items you linked also sound like good candidates for them as well. Thanks for taking the time to provide all of the links. Much appreciated.

The Brass Choir/Quintet I play in at a local church uses a lot of these:

The bone player is a high school freshman and she does an okay job. Reasonable prices and downloadable if you're in a hurry.

The Canadian Brass book of favorite quintets is a great place to start. You could also look at some of Gary Slechta's arrangements ( http://www.selectapress.com/ ).

Randy,

Here's a really excellent article about beginning brass quintet matters. In fact, I'd say it should be required reading for any BQ player:

Another couple set of Canadian Brass books that are a good value with nothing other than straight Bb trumpets for high school level:

The easy and medium level Canadian Brass books aren't hard.

Unfortunately most of the brass quintet charts on my site:

http://uhaweb.hartford.edu/lichtmann/brass5tet.html

are for C trumpet and/or not appropriate for younger players. There are a few things that you may be able to use however:

Two Canzoni From "Weltspiegel" (1613) •P. Peuerl

http://uhaweb.hartford.edu/lichtmann/files/5tets/peuerl5tet.pdf

Four Popular Processionals •Vaious

http://uhaweb.hartford.edu/murtha/files/quintet/processionals5tet.pdf

El Gato Montes • M. Penélla

http://uhaweb.hartford.edu/lichtmann/files/5tets/elgatomontes.pdf

I Love, Alas, I Love Thee •T. Morley

http://uhaweb.hartford.edu/murtha/files/quintet/alasilovethee.pdf

Three Heroic Fanfares •E. Korngold

http://uhaweb.hartford.edu/lichtmann/files/5tets/3fanfares5tet.pdf

As I am fond of saying, "not all of the stuff on my site is GOOD, but it's FREE." It just costs you the paper and ink to print it.
