I was wondering if any of the pros could chime in here. How is this piece typically done part assignment wise?

I believe there are 9 trumpets for the outer movements in addition to 3 trumpets in the orchestra. What part does the principal player usually get? 1st in the 9 trumpet group, or 1st in the orchestra. Or is it some combination of both, playing first on the outer movements as well as in the interior orchestra parts?

Also is there a difference between when the work is done as a live performance vs. recording?

Thanks

I was lucky enough to play on the NY Phil Recording with Masur. Phil played 1st on the 9 trumpet stuff, and Larry Knopp played first on the 3 trumpet stuff. I played 3rd in the 3 trumpet section. The recording was taken mainly from live shows, so nothing changed.

The principal usually plays the 1st part which is the onstage part. I don't believe there are any variations from this when recording it.

Hi Ray, I was there for Gotterdamerung a couple of weeks back. You all sounded awesome! Best event I've been to in many, many years. Congrats. Do you always play on rotary trpts for Wagner?

Thanks! I believe they used to play it on pistons, but I have only done it on rotaries since I got there. The old timers, Jim and Pete, would know the timeline better, unless those kind of details are already lost at their advanced ages.

Ray, we did it when you came in the orchestra so you would finally buy a rotary trumpet .

Thank you for posting here. There's a lot of questionable stuff posted in an open forum like TH but when you guys speak I listen. It's a little like the golf expression - If you want to play like an amateur take tips from an amateur. If you want to play like a pro take tips from a pro.

I started my movie theater ring last night. Bravo! I thought they might show the orchestra or at least Maestro Levine occasionally but no. I'm looking forward to the rest of the ring and attending live performances next season.

When I played this with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, George Vosburgh played 1st in the group of nine and Charles Lirette played 1st in the orchestra. I played it years ago with the Chicago Symphony, but I don't remember how they did the parts. There really is no right, wrong or standard way to do it.

As has been stated, lots of ways to do this.

On the Chicago Symphony / Ozawa recording from the 1970's, Mr. Herseth played first in the orchestra and Mr. Geyer played first in the group of nine. I heard this from Mr. Geyer.

CSO played the Janacek sometime in the mid-'90s. Herseth played the first orchestra part, and Ridenour played the first part in the G-9. Last time I saw CSO play it a few years ago, Martin played first in the G-9 and Tage played the first orchestra part. So kghtpt is right: there doesn't appear to be a standard way to do it. If the compensation is higher for one part than the other, it might influence the decision.

Cool,

Thanks for all the input! I had always assumed that the principal would always be playing with the G-9 trumpets, but I guess I was dead wrong.

Orchestre symphonique de Montréal and Charles Dutoit is a very good recording of the Janacek. Charles Daval plays principal on it...I play the 12th!! We did it again last week, 3 concerts with Nagano, Paul Merkelo sounded fantastic as principal trumpet.

Snowman,

I've got that recording and love it! Did Charles play first in the 9 trumpet stuff or in the orchestra?

Here is the roster when the CSO did this last. Boulez was conducting and I believe it is available for download.

Christopher Martin(CSO)
Mark Ridenour(CSO)
John Hagstrom(CSO)

Steve Hendrickson(NSO)
Tom Cupples (NSO)
Rick Henley(NYC freelancer)

Mark Hughes(Houston Symphony)
Jim Ross(Met Opera)
Neal Bernsten(Pittsburgh Symphony)

Tage Larsen(CSO)
Michael Martin(BSO)
Colin Oldberg

What a wonderful bunch of guys . It was the fullfilment of a life long dream to play on that stage with that orchestra. Mr. Martin also arranged for us to spend the afternoon with Mr. Herseth.
