I just got back from the Oregon coast. While I was there I stopped in at a small musical instrument repair shop that had some wind instruments on display. The one that caught my eye was a shiny silver shepherd's crook cornet. I took a look at it - it was a Holton with a five or six digit S/N and in mint condition. I assumed it was WWII vintage but he store owner said it was from a collection and had been made in 1904.
I looked closer at the engraving and it had "XX Indiana Volunteer Infantry" engraved around the bell ring. I pulled a valve - like new! All I had with me was Trumpet 'pieces but the shop owner had an Olds cornet 'piece which fit the receiver. The horn played beautifully. $375. I had my credit card out in a flash but the shop only takes cash. So I had to leave it there. I may go back with a fistful of dollars.

Old Holtons can be great, but even mint $375 may be high. Get your cash and go see if you can get it for less. _________________ veery715
