OK, gang, if you have not tried the Facet Mutes, you are missing out. This will be the new standard in mutes. I just got a Facet straight and a cup. The straight mute is very . . . "unstraight" and not like any metal mute. It offers an alternative to a metal straight.
The cup is UNREAL. WILL REPLACE all other cups. The cup volume is huge, thus capturing all the sound from the bell. The sound on the Facet cup is beyond description. I'll be posting some YouTube vids soon.
Both offer virtually NO resistance . . . it's like it ain't there.
Leave it to Terry Warburton to revolutionize the industry yet again. _________________ >>======;;=====>

Facet IS the new standard. I have four straights and a cup. I get favorable comments evey time I use one.
But . . .
The real reason for my reply is to note that you have provided an answer to a question which appears in these forae several times each year:
"What do you do with a master's degree in trumpet performance?"
I like your resolution!

I don't think it's a Warburton enterprise, but I could be wrong.
At ITG I talked to Bruce Lee at their booth.
But, yeah - they're awesome. _________________ LA Benge 3X Bb Trumpet

Correct, Bruce Lee is the Facet Mute guy. He piggybacked on a booth with Terry at ITG. I tried several, and the ones that looked the coolest didn't necessarily sound the best in my old (1940) trumpet.
The ones that sounded the best still looked pretty neat. I meant to go back and buy a cup before we all left but, alas, I was sorta stuck in my booth and forgot. _________________ Puttin’ On The Ritz |

My understanding is they are moving the production of Facet mutes to Mims ,Fla. and it is a joint venture with Warburton. Just got mine a month ago and we became dealers for both. I like how they sound and have a Black Limba cup and a Cocobolo Straight mute _________________ 2010 Lawler 25th C7 XL

I too have a facet cup mute, can't remember which model though. But I absolutely LOVE the sound I get out of it. _________________ Bach/Kanstul Frankenhorn

I have a Facet Cup, and a Straight. I think they sound great. Especially the cup. Maybe it sounds so good because it blows the sound right back at you. Had to get these for my "Wild Thing" cornet, as my existing mutes just didn't fit that larger bell.
Hey Tommy T. I've got a Master's in Inst. Mu. Ed. And I had to DO trumpet, as they wouldn't take me on accordion! tch tch tch......So, I sort of have a Master's with trumpet performance.
Rather too bad, as I'm much better on accordion!

By the way, the cup is so big that it won't fit in the case! But they give you a delightful black velvet bag to carry it in. |

Indeed the best mutes I own.
Quote: | the cup is so big that it won't fit in the case |
Same experience here. And I'm always afraid to damage the wooden mutes when carrying them in a bag.
Always made me wonder why there is so little space in a trumpet case to put your mutes and other stuff.
At the moment I use a Protec Ipac triple ... not to carry around 3 trumpets, but 1 trumpet, 1 cornet and mutes (all besides the Facet cup mute) in the 3rd compartment.
So here's a call to the Protec, Bonna, Torpedo (Steve I know you're on this forum too ) guys ... Please produce us a case for 1 or 2 trumpets, but with an extra wide additional compartment to save carry all mutes, specially the best mutes on the market
But back on topic ... like I said earlier .... best mutes I know and own _________________ Trumpet : Yamaha YTR-9335CHS + Yamaha YTR-6335H

I am looking into the Facet mutes as well as the Balu.
Hope to see (play) both at the Mendez Institute this summer.
Anyone have any insight on pros & cons of each?
Comparisons?
Thanks...

Sold my 46 Harley to a "Bill Dishman" from California. He never paid me for it. Hope he's NO relation to you Bill. This happened at Altus AFB in 1858. |

I havent had a chance to try the facet straight mutes yet, but I can give you some insight about the Balu.
Balu used to make 2 different straight mutes. the Majestic and Exuberance. I got both of them before they stopped making the Exuberance (I don't see it listed anymore). IMO, the Majestic is fantastic. It's louder than the Trumcor Lyric and not quite as tight sounding, yet softer than say.. a Tom Crown straight mute. It can put out volume though. It's perfect for those "Soft passages that need to be heard", or when you need to be muted but don't want it to be super loud.
I'd love to get a facet and record some stuff back to back. _________________ (List horns here) |

I gotta say I got one just because they look SUPER SEXY, but the service I received in buying it really helped solidify that it was the right choice.
Add to that of course that I haven't used another mute since it arrived and I'd say it was a good choice. Here's a shot of mine in action last month

Sorry...but I wasn't around in 1858. (was 1 year old in 1958)
Have never been to California and have no real desire to go there. (I did hear that San Diego and northern part of the state were both nice though.)
My uncle "traumatized" me on his motorcycle when I was eight and I have never been on one since.
I do like the people that ride them however. Very easy to talk to and I admire the adventurous spirit.

I have a Kawasaki GPZ 1100. Got it in 95, and never saw another one like it. It's funny when I take off my helmet at a gas station, and hear the kids say, "Hey! look at the old buck on the croch rocket. duh? how do you spell croch. kroch haha what old buck! I'm only 76......... |

I was right about Facet production being moved to Warburton's facility, but I was wrong about Warburton moving into a larger shop. I understand they are involved in the move as we type! Didn't mean to mislead! _________________ 2010 Lawler 25th C7 XL

Bill,
-The Ion Balu Majestic (I've got the Red Mahogany) is hands down the best and most resonant soft mute I know; much better than a Trumcor. Its built-in resonator does its work really well, resulting in an almost immediate response and a metal-like sound, even when played at ultra low dynamics in the lowest register. It is THE mute for Shostakovich's piano/trumpet concerto. Personally I wouldn't use it for anything above mp/mf though.
-Facet has as many wood sorts as sound colours to choose from (I've got 4 of them, Sitka Spruce being my favourite), but in general they are all purpose straight mutes with a very even sound, great pitch, low resistance and a superb response. Facet mutes always sound extremely beautiful, so sometimes you might prefer to use a metal straight mute when looking for a thinner or "meaner" sound.
*And yes... the Facet Sitka Spruce cup mute is just A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Best cup I've ever tried/owned.
Hope his helps,
MvW.
