Hi there!
I know this is the wrong forum for this question but anyway....I live in Sweden and me and my familly (wife and 2 adult sons) are planing to go to New York in July. We are looking for Flights and hotelīs at the travelbyroes here in Sweden and found some real nice ones near central park. They are quite expensiv though. So my question to you New York trumpetplayers is: Can you recommend a good hotel for us? It doesnīt have to be in the absolute center of the city but in the neighburhood. The ones we have cost about 140 dollars/person and night wich means 560 dollars/night for me and my familly. Something not so expensive would be nice.
Can you help a trumpetfriend from Sweden?
Maybe we can play some duets during our visit!
Greetings from Sweden

When I worked in New York, to avoid the pretty steep hotel rates, I stayed at the Stamford Hilton in Connecticut. It's a 40 minute ride on the MTA, which takes you to Grand Central Station. _________________ Richard Ashmore |

Before I moved to Toronto, Canada, I lived in New Jersey Specifically the town I mentioned Secaucus, NJ. It is very safe and easy to get into NYC. I used to make the commute daily until I moved. I think the cost is about $6.00 per person on the bus. It really is only 15-30 mins by bus. They have a dedicated lane for the busses at peak times. Hotels are less than half the price.
There is another hotel in New York I sometimes stay at called the Fitzpatrick at grand Central -http://www.fitzpatrickhotels.com/ they are around $250 per night in August
One last thing don't miss Dillon's music in Woodbridge, NJ
Best of Luck - |

Just stayed at Horizon Inn in Woodbridge NJ about 2 miles from Dillons and they're about a 10 minute walk to the train station. Wife and I paid $70 a night and it was one of the nicest hotels we've been anywhere. http://www.horizoninn.net/.
Not far from Newark airport.

If you're traveling with 4 people, don't stay in NJ. If a single passenger train ticket is $6, it will cost an additional $48 round trip each day in addition to lost time getting in/out of Manhattan. From New Jersey, you will have more difficult access to attractions in Brooklyn, Queens, or The Bronx. If you want to do something in Manhattan like a concert that ends late, the trains don't run as often late nights and weekends.
Check hotel prices by location on priceline.com, expedia.com, hotels.com, kayak.com, or travelocity.com.
I once stayed in an inexpensive hotel on Broadway & 103rd St, Hotel Marrekesh. 3 floors, no elevators, small rooms, but it was in the $120-140/night range. Safe neighborhood, easy access to transportation. There are other similar hotels elsewhere in the city.
Another option is a business suite (Doubletree Suites in Times Square is an example) or apartment style hotel where 4 people can stay in 1 room. The WooGo chain have apartment style rooms that accommodate 4 people. These are very low budget quarters with little or no amenities. |

Classe, I have some bad news for you.
There's really no such thing as a good, cheap hotel in New York City. You should figure around $200/night for a room (not per person) to keep you out of fleabags in dicey neighborhoods.
If you're coming as a tourist, Midtown and the Theater district is probably where you want to be. Right now, the Hilton Times Square has rooms starting at $161 and the Millennium Broadway Times Square has rooms starting at $199. I've occasionally found cheaper rates through hotels.com or priceline.com.
Nothing will ruin a trip faster than staying in a crappy hotel. As some of my TH brothers have pointed out, you could stay in New Jersey, but then ... you're staying in New Jersey. Like MarkZ says, the transportation costs, which are also very high, will suck up your extra time and money. And you're staying in New Jersey.
If you're looking to save money, stay within walking distance of the things you want to do. And don't eat breakfast or lunch in restaurants -- if you think our hotels are expensive, wait'll you see our menus. |

One last thing: No matter where you stay, you have to take the train down to Woodbridge, NJ.
Paris has the Louvre.
Rome has the Vatican.
Vienna has the Staatsoper.
But we've got Dillon's. |

The Hotel Pennsylvania was immortalized in Glenn Miller song Pennsylvania 6- 5000, which was the hotel's phone number. _________________ Tom Barreca
