I didn't get the chance to play it for long, but it was incredible. I must say I played a standard Courtois 106 cornet and it was really poor - for me - while I had it. |
Hi bach_again
I've heard great things about the 921 Sovereign. I tried a secondhand one years ago, for sale at a music shop, but this one had been poorly maintained and played badly. I'd love to have ago on a good example, but don't know anyone who has one, and have never fancied risking buying one on Ebay.

Congratulations. I've had the opportunity to play a S-W cornet, and it was just fabulous. Hard to go wrong with such a choice. |

Hi SirBuzzALot
I checked also, and the Sovereign is on the Besson website. You can still buy them new in the UK, so I guess that they aren't discontinued.

Hi Lou, This is on Ebay now.
Any use? Best wishes, Frank. |
Hi Frank
Thank you very much. This is really appreciated. Sadly, I have already put a deposit on a new one, but to be honest, having found a marked difference between the two prestiges at Phil Parker, I decided to buy the Smith Watkins that I'd tried.

The SW "Soloist" models are made by Kanstul to Richard Smith's specs here in the states and then shipped to Richard's place in York where the leadpipes which he manufactures over there are then fitted per customers choice. The horns may also be plated over there. The horn is also QCd by Richard over there and then shipped directly to the customer.
I believe the K2 models are also manufactured to Richard's specs by Kanstul but are then shipped directly to the end customer without passing thru Richard's hand. At least that is my understanding. _________________ Smith Watkins "Soloist" cornet with K2 and T4 leadpipes and Wick 4 Heritage mpc |

Hi MM2 & Flattergrub
I didn't know to be quite honest that the Smith Watkins cornets, are made in the USA by Kanstul, but it doesn't bother me in the least.

Lou - You are gonna have a great, great horn. I know many great players that are playing them. The woman that won the high brass technical competition this year in the U.S. at NABBA (Amy Nelson) plays an SW "Soloist". Check out Ashley Hall here playing Arban's "Fantasie Brilliant". She plays an SW K2.

I wouldn't sell my "Soloist" model for anything. I'll die with this horn My next project is to have Richard Smith and Kanstul build me a "Soloist" model with interchangable bells. as well as the leadpipes. _________________ Smith Watkins "Soloist" cornet with K2 and T4 leadpipes and Wick 4 Heritage mpc |

I'd suggest trying out Custom Getzen's, like 3850S, or Schlike too.
When I looked for a new cornet the Schlike won, but my Getzen 850S was very, very close and $1000 less.
The right MP makes a big difference too. Do you already have DW4/4B ? _________________ 1995 Getzen Eterna 850S Bb cornet, .464" bore, MP:GR66#6, Wicks#4

Lyndon
Do you play these cornets in a brass band? If you do how well do they blend with the other cornets? |

Hi lyndon153
Thank you very much. My new cornet is due to arrive by courier today, so I've made a final decision.
Regarding the Getzen, I've heard very good things about it. Unfortunately, it just isn't that easy to try cornets in the UK anymore, most stockists keeping only student models in stock, and ordering in professional models once they've made a sale.
I had to travel to the capital to try what I did.

Yes, I have a Denis Wick 4B and 3B.
All the best

That's a sad state of affairs. I assumed the UK was the cornet capital of the world... _________________ Olde Towne Brass

Dale, you're assumption is probably correct, but there's no need for players to go shopping since bands supply the instruments. In my band only 3 out of 10 cornets are privately owned. Plus the major suppliers have trade stands at contests, so players looking to buy tend to shop there. |

Hi again Lou!....hope you and yours are well!
I think that the UK IS arguably the 'cornet capital' but I don't know for how much longer,...the prob that Lou has is that, like me, she lives in the South of England, probably the most 'non-brass band' area of the UK. In the north aroudn 'brass band country' it's much easier to find all the BB stuff including instruments and expert teachers etc becasue that's where the worlds top bands are,...although the current champs are the Cory Band from the Rhonda,..another good BB area of the UK. All of these areas have both specialised music/brass outlets and, increasingly, one-man specialists. Also several of the makers are up there too, apart from 'Eclipse'. |
