I would not worry about horns, mouthpieces or music (other than what you already have). That should all be addressed fairly early in your first semester. Once you decide what direction you want to take (Jazz or Classical) then you can worry about new horns, etc...

I would definitely invest in a good metronome - it is possibly the single most important practice tool you can have. If you plan on practicing anywhere other than the music building (which may or may not have nice practice rooms, with stands) you will need a nice portable stand. I recommend against the wire kind, mainly because they are pretty flimsy and if you ever need a stand for a gig it will not do well. I purchased my stand from Woodwind Brasswind for around $20 and it is great. Plus it folds up very nicely and has a carrying case. A stand light would be good as well, but not necessary at this point (thinking forward to possible gigs). Finally - get some sort of recording device. I have a Zoom H4n, but you could go with the less expensive version (H2) or some other brand and do just as well. You will find that you sound much different when you're the listener.

a 100 dollar craigslist horn isn't necessarily a POS. I see lots of student model Yamahas on craigslist for around that, and those horns play pretty damn nicely.

Yup. Not tanks, but they play quite well.

No good pro-level horn should be taken out for marching band. Or Pep Band Nope. Neither the horn nor marching or pep band deserve it.

Heh. I made it all through school with my Strad with not so much as a nick. The idea was to use "just my beginner's cornet" (Olds Recorder, circa '56) for school, but it just played too differently and I couldn't adjust.
