Hi all
A colleague has very generously lent me his Pic to have a blow on. Wow, what a confounding, confusing and difficult little beast the pic is. This is my first attempt at playing a Pic, and I have a new found respect for those who can play it with skill and artistry...Despite the difficulty, I can see myself falling in love with it...........

Check out the Chris Gekker book on Picc performance - it's got some good exercises and great text.

Also, if you think picc is a beast, try Baroque trumpet!

A beast indeed! If you don't have two strong octaves above third line C on a regular Bb, you have some work to do.

Whatever your experience, do know that not all piccs are the same. Some models like the Yamahas that use trumpet mouthpiece aren't too difficult to transition to while others can feel pretty foreign.

I think that just about everybody has "some work to do" when it comes to mastering the piccolo trumpet. Certainly, without a good upper register it's going to be a struggle, but it seems to me that a player who can play up to "only" high D or E concert with control and finesse may well do better than somebody who can blast out double C.

Difficult to play or spell?

Step up to the chalkboard and write:

I will learn to spell piccolo trumpet correctly and learn to play it well.

Don't play it if you can't spell it!

Somebody better let Adolph Herseth know that...

And the majority of other great pic players.

Now I get it -- he's talking alto clef!

In that case, I retract my previous statement.

The pic is a Yamaha 9820,which I believe is a rather good horn. Ive tried it with both Bb and A pipes, and have found the A pipe to be a little easier to get my head around. I am no stranger to small horns, having played Soprano cornet in brass bands, and have a decent range. I will have to give the pic back to its owner, but I am going to enjoy the challenge while I can.
My apolagys, to tha spellin poleece, I didnt reelize how imprdant spellin is heer.

Reminds me of when first I started here on the TH and mispelled the musical instrument popular in British brass bands as "coronet".

That's likely the model I've played, Yamaha 9820C 3 valve+rotor, I found that to be the easiest playing of all the models I've tried.

Spelling isn't important. Some people are just mean spirited.

Imo, mouthpiece choice can make all the difference. Don't just go with the standard 7E (etc).....try every possible option. I play on a 10 1/2 C and it works well for me.

The 7E is a great overall picc mouthpiece for a lot of people. Good starting place too.
