Look for the "NancyBob" post here:

This is a great time to post my NON WINNING captions to one of the New Yorker Cartoon Caption contests of December 2009. (I think I forgot to send them in on time.)

My two entries:
No. 1"Hopefully, she'll get one of the New York Philharmonic bass jobs."
No. 2....."You should see them when she plays piccolo!"

I wonder where the four who left went? I don't have time to look to find out, but would be interested if someone knows.

It's interesting that NYPhil can afford to hire four basses to permanent or contracted positions (which I assume could/would become permanent if the orchestra was satisfied) while in other US cities, some of them large cities, orchestras are in big trouble. And then there's City Opera . . . also in NYC, decimated. A study in contrasts . . . a little public funding for orchestras in the US could make such a difference, but the current political climate virtually makes that a non-starter. Someone should start an all-Republican orchestra which could be funded by a SuperPAC from shadowy corporate donations. . . .

The four vacancies were all retirements...I think.

Makes sense that one couldn't do better, at this point than the NYPhil . . . . only thing better might be NYPhil retirement + teaching . . . . didn't Vacchiano do that for about 29 years?? No performance pressure and you even get to be mean to students <BG>. Uh, sorry, I meant you get to extoll the virtues of self-discipline . . . .

Now if only the NYPhil doesn't go bankrupt and default on its pension responsibilities . . . . . I guess I should shut up now . . . .
