|
|
Hey all!
I have an upcoming audition and the following excerpts are required:
Mahler 3: Posthorn & Mvt. 6
Moussorgsky: Pictures (The Promenade)
Wagner: Tannhauser
Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherezade
Beethoven: Lenore 2 & 3
Strauss: Don Juan
I have a Bb, Eb, and C at my disposal and was wondering what you would suggest for this rep!
Thanks |

Mahler Posthorn - Bb (the concert C-D trill isn't so hot on a C trumpet)
Mahler 3 VI - whatever you can survive playing it on. (Probably C, but maybe Eb, since it's sustained high, soft playing. Whatever sounds better and is more secure for you.)
Promenade - C.
Tannhauser - if it's the big chorale at the end, it'll have to be Bb for the low concert Es.
Scheherazade - C.
Leonore 2/3 - I think Bb is a nice sound for these (particularly No. 3), but could be either Bb/C.
Don Juan - C.
If you have a C cornet, I've never tried it this way, myself, but I hear it's good for the Posthorn solo. It'd be a nice sound, too. |

I was thinking C trumpet for all of them, although I had never thought about the trill in the posthorn solo. I just worked through it... _________________ YTR 9445 CH, YTR 6335 HGS-Larson/BrassWerks conversion , YTR 8335 LAS,

You would play pedal E FF whole notes on C trumpet in Tannhauser in an audition? Not me. |

Oh yeah that was the one I would play on B-flat. _________________ YTR 9445 CH, YTR 6335 HGS-Larson/BrassWerks conversion , YTR 8335 LAS,

All the rest could certainly be C trumpet excerpts - personally, I struggle with that C-D trill in the Posthorn solo, and if I'm already switching once to Bb, I might choose to switch more than once. But, it's certainly personal preference. |

I like doing Leonore 2 and Wagner on Bb, though I'm getting more used to Leonore on C.
The trill in posthorn can be easily done on C by using your air properly. If that doesn't work, then move your first slide out some to assist with the trill.
Everything else is easily performed on C. _________________ (List horns here) |

How much time/experience do you have playing the C and Eb horns?
You could be in for a rough day if you typically only play on Bb... |

For Mahler C works the best for me. Work out the trill. Its not too bad. Try using a TF curry mouthpiece. It works great.
Bb for Wagner and C for everything else. |
