I recently purchased one of these for what I believe to be a good price. Pretty rare little horn...only made in 1982. Here is an article with great info and pictures for those interested:

http://yamahawinds.wordpress.com/2010/04/21/ytr-9910-50-great-products/

Mine is in great shape aside from a small dent on the bell section and two stuck slides (all easy fixes).

I have had one person who owned one tell me that the Bb/A sides were worthless on his horn, but I have a friend who borrowed one from Ray Mase to work up the Brandenburg on who said that horn was butter in all three keys.

Mine is set up in C/Bb right now, and both of those sides play pretty darn good even without the ability to fine-tune the 3rd valve slide for Bb. I believe once I can install the longer slides, the low register on the A-side should be at least as good as my 9830, which is manageable. It certainly plays EVEN in all three keys...the harmonic series is pretty consistent intonationally with each valve combination...not too much discrepency from slot to slot. The top written F and G is stupid easy and in-tune in every key.

Bottom line is that I need to sell one of my piccolos. If the rarity of the 9910 increases it's value significantly, I might re-sell it. If I don't stand to make much of anything, I might keep it and sell my 9830.

So, the question is how much do these horns normally fetch? I can't find one for sale online anywhere, and I suspect you don't see them come up very often. This one just fell in my lap...private seller contacted me out of the blue.

Thanks for your help!

Paul Poovey

When I saw Jens Lindemann play the Brandenburg at UCLA he was using a horn that looked very much like that and it was thrilling.

Hi Paul,

I've got a mint 9910 (with custom Blackburn pipe) and can only agree with this statement:

Personally I find it absolutely fantastic in C (really quite stunning), but only very regular in Bb and pretty much useless in A.
I guess it all depends on what you are looking for in a piccolo and how often you'd perform on it.
It's my Brandenburg trumpet and it also saved my "behind" a couple of times when doing extremely demanding contemporary pieces in my orchestra, but... having far better Bb/A alternatives at hand I wouldn't dare using it for standard piccolo repertoire. In short, mine gets hardly any use at all.
IMO it could be a great additional instrument for people who already own a reliable Bb/A, but it's less recommendable as one-and-only piccolo (I would never replace the 9830 you already own for a 9910).

It's a very vulnorable, but well made and special instrument and only few were made.
I've seen them go for $1500-1800, only once for $2500 but that was a long time ago and IMO overpriced.
Over time I've seen ads from people looking for this model, so finding a buyer shouldn't be too hard.
Having said that, I would never sell mine though...

Hope this helps,
MvW.

If you haven't already done so, it would be great to have the serial number of your picc added to the Yamaha Serial number database found here.

I also have a friend with the predecessor to the YTR-9910, the YTR-991 pitched in C only, for sale. Details upon request.

Cheers

Sorry your experience with the Bb and A sides doesn't mimic my own, Maarten - My horn may be one of the exceptions. I was thinking that it might be a profitable transaction, but I guess there might not be the demand I thought when I purchased it. I should be able to get my money back out of it if I sell it though.

ertatta - I had forgotten that Freidrich played this horn for Bburg...LOVE his playing!

AlfaFreak - I submitted the serial info to the site...thanks!
