And that, is what happens when improvisation turns into composition. any one of his lines could easily stand alone as the basis of a new melody. Remarkable.

WOW!! That was amazing! Everything Tom plays is so beautiful and musical, he's a poet! Years ago I saw Roy Hargrove play with Tom at the Jazz Gallery, they played 'Serenity'(JoHen), and Tom took the most PERFECT solo I've ever heard in my life, everyone on stage and in the audience was just totally floored by it. Tom really is one of a kind.

Had to post that one on my Facebook page. Just brilliant!

I hear some "Brownie-isms" in that solo.

What a gorgeous solo--he's really taken the best elements of KD, Clifford, Freddie, & Chet and really fused them into such an amazing original voice--one of the greatest improvisors alive!!!!!

wow..the ideas just flow out of his head...such fluid sound..

not to mention one of the best bands today, Wayne, Danny are strong improvisors also. Tom is back at the Vanguard in August. While in NYC last month, they were at the Smoke weekend jazz brunch...wanted to go so bad, but sold out hour only shows at $35 a piece.

@J. Crowley, did you here that he Jazz Gallery is loosing its lease and now looking for new space? owner of buildling wants to go residential. What a great intimate place to hear live cutting edge jazz and you can BOB too.

What's that little melodic fragment at 2'52 that he transposes upwards? I think it's a song quote, but I can't place it.

Thanks for sharing this one...love Tom's playing!

That melodic fragment sounds familiar, but I can't seem to place it. If anyone else knows if it's from a tune I'd like to know too.

Not sure if it's a quote but I've definitely heard Kenny Garrett play that same idea and sideslipping like Tom did through the harmony--sounds killin!

I think it is from the tune "You won't be satisfied until you break my heart."

According to Tom's website he will be at the Detroit Jazz Fest on Labor Day weekend. I hope to get up there for that. The lineup is going to be swinging!
