Anybody use a neti pot?

Did it affect your playing (good or bad)?

I used it once when my nose was clogged from a cold or sinus problem. Boy did it do the job, all sorts of crap cam out. I did it before I went to bed, but I did feel a lot better. Don't know how it will affect trumpet playing though.

Hi,

I've used one many times, especially during really dry periods of weather or when I have a cold. They're great in general, although I can't really point to any effect one way or another on playing a wind instrument. I'm assuming you DON'T have any chronic sinus issues...

I use it every time I get a head cold. It is a gret way to clear up the gunk before playing a gig or before you go to bed. Nice to be able to sleep instead of just suffering through waiting for the Nyquil to kick in.

The neti pot is awesome.
I have used one for a long time. Every morning. Keeps colds and sore throats away.
Has not been a problem for trumpet playing at all. Use sea salt or non iodine salt. Best used as a preventative. When you have a cold and are real stuffed up do not use. I am a firm believer in its positive health benefits. The only downside is that it has not increased my range.

If only it did. We'd all work it into our daily routine.

I use one regularly. If anything, I think it helps, because it keeps all of the crap out of my sinuses...it's fantastic.

Its a good idea to sterilize the water before you use these things... using tap water is an excellent way to contract brain-eating-amoeba.... there are several well documented cases of this... I'm not kidding.

AGREED! We just moved down here to Louisiana this past August. Those brain eating amoeba cases occurred HERE! It's scary... I buy distilled water, and use that. You're actually supposed to do that anyway.

Thanks for the heads up guys. I googled the brain eating ameba. Very informative.
Well it's one less thing I will have to do in the morning and
like I said, it never did increase my range.

I used to get a sinus infection at least once per year usually sometime around the spring. Hard to blow the horn with, what felt like 2 ping pong balls in my sinus cavities. I began using the Neti pot 2 or 3 times per week as a preventive measure a few years ago and haven't had a problem with sinus since. I'm a beleiver. No range increase though

I use it after spending the afternoon doing yard work. Between the lawn mover and the weedwacker, I noticed I had a LOT of dirt in my nostrils. The netipot does a great job of removing a lot of that junk.

Everything feels a lot cleaner and I feel better that I'm washing that stuff out before it goes any further in my body.

Can't say it helps the trumpet playing, but it sure hasn't hurt it.

I use it during allergy season.
I am not a doctor, so try at your own risk. With that said, I have used a neti pot to help get rid of clogged ears during or after a cold (by ears, I really mean eustachian tube). Instead of letting it stream out my other nostril, I plug both of them and tilt my head back for a few seconds, then let it drain. It works for me. There is not much worse than performing with clogged ears/eustachian tube. An exception being brain-eating amoeba.

I understand you can also blow through one of those things. If you do, you get (with a nod to Christopher Plummer) The Sound of Mucus.

+1 on distilled water.

I find that using one when I am sick helps a lot, and it also helps prevent the annual sinus/ear infection that I typically get from all the pressure and built up congestion. They are gross, but I am a fan.

do i have this correct... you begin mouth breathing, then pour the water in the higher nostril, and it will drain out the lower?
gone one long way through life without having heard of a neti pot. interesting to say the least.

The neti pot is a cleansing technique from the ancient science of Yoga. As a daily practitioner of the neti pot, today, I stopped cold turkey. It will be interesting to see if my range increases.
