|
|
Hi all. I've always enjoyed playing my flugel, and more so the mouthpiece that came with it which is a bach 3c fl. I love the flexibility and ease of play of a flugel and this particular mouthpiece seems to facilitate flexibility. When I play a similar bach 3c on my trumpet, I don't get nearly the same flexibility (and dark quality). I understand the differences between the conical bore of a flugel vs. a trumpet. I pulled the flugel mouthpiece and started comparing it to my bach 3c and monette 6b. I guess I never realized that the biggest difference is the depth of the cup. The flugel mouthpiece cup is almost 2x as deep as the trumpet mouthpieces.
I wrapped some tape around the flugel mouthpiece, pulled out the tuning slide a bit and viola! More flexibility and control, and tonguing became noticeably easier. Not so much with the high range though. So my question is, where can I find a trumpet 3C or similar size mouthpiece with that deep cup? Anyone have any thoughts or ideas? Thanks so much for your help! |

A Bach 3 (no letter) is a lot deeper and more V-shaped than a 3C. That's probably the place to start.

You might want to try a Curry 3BC or TC, because those cups are way deeper than a (Bach)3C, but not as deeo as a flugel mouthpiece either, and they yield a fantastic sound.
Time and again I can oly recommend Mark´s outstanding work. |

+1 on the Curry, but my preference is a TF.
When you can find them, A cup mouthpieces can go a long way toward this type of sound. Bach, unfortunately, only makes them in relatively small sizes. A vintage DiOrio 3A is one of my favorites, and works great on cornet or trumpet. _________________ Vintage Olds & Reynolds & Selmers galore

Thanks guys. @ Tom, I have a bach 3, but the cup is only slightly deeper than a standard 3C (although I do notice a slight differnce in flexibility with the 3) |

Oh, in that case, the Curry 3TF is probably where you want to go. That is a huge, deep cup.

Another vote for curry, but I think TC cup is a good place to start. _________________ ~Zack

Warburton MBC is a great mouthpiece that doesn't suck out your energy nor range, and still has a beautiful depth of sound, unlike many too deep pieces I've played.
Also, you could buy other shanks to fit a cornet or in my case, I use it as a flugel piece with cornet shank.
Just tried it with a trumpet shank (on trumpet) and the sound is fantastic - very flugel-like. |

Curry TC or TF cup. Get both and pick one, send the other back. |

I find that my Kanstul M-B2 and Monette B2s3 give me almost the same overall feeling on trumpet that I have on flugel: very open and flexible, but with a much faster/lighter response.
If you already own a Monette and don't like it that much, the Bach 5v could be a great choice. Especially if you want a really dark sound! _________________
