I'm not allergic to silver or gold, however I find a plastic mouthpiece way more comfortable. After a long gig, skin soreness has gone, its just muscle fatigue soreness left.

I do notice the sound is not as "hard" or "brittle", could this be my perception, or a differing throat/back-bore combination in the Kelly?

My main mouthpiece is a GR 67c**, but GR do not seem to offer a plastic substitute. What are my options?

GR has those lexan and delrin rims. If you have a piece made screw rim. They work great.

I have a Warburton 6XD Delrin rim and a Kelly 5C, both very comfortable and great for cold weather. I had a Warburton 5M Lexan I really, really wished I'd kept, may have a need for a shallower cup during Mardi Gras, but as temps have been in the 70's today don't expect it will be a problem.

I played the warbonite material and loved the way it felt. My trumpet instructor said it took all of the unnessecary edgey/brightness to my sound. It definitely sounded good. and it feels really soft compared to metal. also you can get it in a variety of colors i think.. ive seen red and green so far. I know Austin Custom Brass has recently released a new type of plastic like material mouthpiece that might be worth a shot at trying and I hear Trent Austins mouthpieces are great so I assume his new mouthpiece will be just as good.

If you play a plastic, have any of you added the kelly "tone enhancer" ring to add mass so you get more sound out the bell? Does this ring fit on other maker's plastic mouthpieces?

I just got my newest acrylic pieces in from prototyping and they are fantastic. Paired with a heavy backbore these are the closest thing to metal I have found and sound incredibly good. For my allergies to silver and Gold this makes me incredibly happy!

(and they look cool)

Best,
T

I know when I used to hang around Schilke's shop, Ren always used a Delrin-rimmed mouthpiece. Kept it in a mouthpiece "holster" on his belt next to a toothbrush. I wish now I'd have asked why he used delrin but sold me gold plated...
