No, not my best Bob Uecker impression...
I've been playing 1st and 2nd cornet parts in the Motor City Brass Band. At tonight's rehearsal, I was told that I would be playing 4th Solo Cornet. I assumed it was because we had some folks that weren't going to be able to make a couple of gigs we have coming up in June. At the mid-rehearsal break, the director announced that our Principal Cornet and her husband, the 4th Solo Cornet, had decided to leave the group.
So, it looks like I've been promoted!!!
Not to brag up, but I couldn't be more excited to get this chance after only 8 months on the comeback trail.

Have fun. I started out about 12 years ago on 3rd part and lobbied for 2nd part for a year or two. I was bumped to 3rd solo spot and it was somewhat of a rough go...I got more than I asked for. Finally, the lead 2nd spot opened and I've been there ever since.

Congratulations on your comeback successes. Especially with a brass band, which can be so much fun.
Not to be pedantic, but there usually isn't a "1st" cornet part in brass band arrangements, except in cases where they are transcriptions from a different genre. For example, some orchestral fanfares have Soprano, Solo, 1st, 2nd and 3rd for things that are really just block chords of roughly equal weight on each part.
In almost all other cases it's Soprano, Solo (usually 4 of them and often with 2 or more divisi lines), Repiano, 2nd (often two) and 3rd (often 2). You could argue that the Repiano part is "1st" but it is quite often a unique line altogether, or doubled with the flugel. |

Understood, Randy. I was just commenting based on what it says on the tops of the pages.  We do have some numbers that are scored with non-traditional instrumentation. So we do have some parts that are labeled 1st Cornet.
Dale, I'm really looking forward to the challenge that this represents. I'm gonna have to do a LOT more practicing!!!

In my experience of brass banding, marches often have a solo cornet part and 1st cornet part, the two parts being largely the same. One difference in my experience, being that the solo part often has a couple of lines in places, with the 1st cornet part only having the lower of the two. The 1st cornet part is generally considered to be the rep/flugel part.

Salvation Army scores are marked first and second cornet. We see quite a few of these as we do contests that involve a march and a hymn tune.

I'm assuming you mean Washington Greys by Claudio Grafulla. That one dates back to the early 1860's, and we sometimes perform it in our Civil War brass band. It has a more modern "feel" to it, though, a precursor to the golden age of marches in the U.S. in the late 19th/early 20th century.

I had no idea that it was written so long ago, and totally agree that it has a modern feel to it.
Just in case people aren't familiar with Arnhem, here is a link to it. It is just the first clip on You Tube, and I have no idea who the band are. I particularly like the trio (but not on this recording, out of tune!), but maybe it is just me. This was never a popular march with the rest of the cornet section in my previous brass band, gut buster, if you want to play it at the end of the practise you can play it on your own etc., were some of the comments.

Enjoy the front row - yes, you'll have to practice, solo cornet is a chop-buster. On the plus side, if you're on top of it, everything else will be a doddle!
I'm playing Rep in my band, which suits me fine - not quite as high, not quite as much playing, and the occasional solo to massage my ego.
When someone is away I invariably go up to 4th or 3rd chair - just often enough for me to remember why I like playing Rep!
No better feeling than nailing the solo cornet part on a difficult piece - you'll have a ball.
As for contest marches, we're playing Castell Coch this weekend at the Bendigo Eisteddfod. Haven't played it for about 20 years, and I'd forgotten what a good march it is!
