|
|
I'm thinking about a back-up horn to my 1956 Olds Recording (which I love!).
Anyone got any advice for a cheap back-up that's similar (I find the Recording has great projection for lead-playing).
Thanks
PS (had an Ambassador as a spare but didn't like it - maybe I had a bad one as heard they are usually good horns?) _________________ Eclipse Enigma

Get an early -pre '55 - Olds Special. Dark and projection very similar to the Recording. _________________ veery715

Maybe an Olds Special? I found the Olds Super and Olds Studio to be a bit brighte than the Recording, not to say the Recording won't brighten up when you want to get bright. The Olds Special seemed to have a tone more like the Recording( not quite as bright as the Super or Studio and just a pleasant sound). I have owned all the above models at some point. Just my experience with my mouthpiece. Your mileage may vary.
Also, don't get me wrong. I love the 40's Olds Supers and the Olds Recording! I just think the "personality profile" of the Olds Special resembles the Olds Recording more than the other two. |

FWIW, and this may sound weird at first, but a wide-wrap Conn would have some of that extra bell-side tubing which the Recording is known for. Sneaky sometimes, those ol' coots over to CG's workshop. Thanks for the replies guys.
Think I'll check out a Special or Super.
Have been looking for a cheap Recording for a while but there really aren't any decent ones around cheap.
A friend of mine does have a Mendez that neds doing up though - might see if I can persuade him to part with it! _________________ Eclipse Enigma
