Trumanjazzguy just put a dent in the bell of my pristine stomvi Vr2... How upset should i be?

Clarifications:
it was a total accident
nobody is really mad at anyone
it's not a really bad dent, and he offered to pay for it

Assuming you gave him permission to play/handle the horn...and assuming you didn't try to work it out with him before posting this...I think he should be madder at you than you him...accidents happen. If he refuses to make it right, then you should be mad. Is that the case? Has he refused to compensate for the damage?

This.

**** happens. An expert makes the **** unhappen. I'm with the other guys, you must be really mad right now. Calm the frak down.

No one can tell you how to feel, and I wouldn't pretend to. By all means rage... in private. It's your privilege. Let the man pay for his mistake and call it done.

Be as mad as you care to for now. However, once a little time passes, forgive him.

The right thing is for him to pay to fix your horn.

About a month ago I was doing a gig with a long time horn section mate sax player. We have been friends for many years, and he is also my shooting buddy. We have played in many bands together, and done lots of recordings as well.

So, we're playing for a donors party at an art museum in Balboa Park. It's a very live room, and the only mics are for 2 vocalists. We both have big sounds, and are handling the space quite well. At the last minute, he decides to set up his hot spot. He starts frantically pulling cords out of his bag as we have about 5 minutes. He has his back to me, but then I hear a "thunk" and look down and see a big dent right above the oak tree on the bell of my Wild Thing. My friend had yanked a mic cord out of his bag with 2 feet of slack, and the xlr tip went straight for my bell! I couldn't believe it! I had to look at that thing the whole gig. Yes I was mad.

Flip did his best to take the dent out, but there's still a wrinkle. I have vintage horns that have character, and it doesn't bother me because I got them that way. Now my WT has character, and I have a story about my friend, who I still love. That's life! Horn still plays and sounds great.

some form of excruciating torture would be best, after all he dinged your horn, maybe lock him in a cupboard with hairy spiders or when is not looking put some chewing gum down the bell of his horn.

A little older than that, add more than a few decades. I read this and found it to be very funny. I am sorry you didn't.

As far as pranks go this is mild. For instance squeezing habernero oil on the mouthpiecs would be considerably worse.

Maybe putting some of the sour powder on it would be milder?

You could always roll up a booger and drop it down the mpc. That should get you a couple more years.

Gotta go . .

Hi

These things happen. Most of the time, you don't know who did it, and if the damage is smaller, don't notice it straight away (like when I clean my car, I notice small scrapes where people have kindly driven into it when parking, opened their door on it etc.).

If someone owned up and offered to pay, I'd take them up on the offer, showing them the cost of repairs upfront, so that they knew that I was only taking what it cost me to repair.

If they didn't offer, I would think that this was poor behaviour on their part, but I wouldn't ask for money, or name them on a public forum.

All the best

Lou

let it go. pay for the repairs and get the work done. it's straightforward. then you will see whether your friend pays up or not. if he doesn't, you have learned something.
it's a nice instrument. you have to play it and enjoy it. the friend, you may or may not need.
