I have a screw top mouthpiece from Pickett Brass and the top is pretty close to cemented to the backbore. I've tried heating up the top to no avail. Does anyone have any tricks that could possibly work before I break out the wrench? (just kidding)

Thanks

Try taps around the rim with a wood or rawhide mallet.

Cold water; grab each end with some surgical gloves or something rubber to give you more grip; lightly tap to loose up. If you get them separated, apply some tuning slide grease before screwing them together.

+1

... Works for me every time.

Hit it square on top of the rim. You may have to hit it pretty hard a few times if its really stuck.

If tapping & rubber gloves don't work, get yourself 2 lengths of cycle or car innertube. 6"x1/2" should do. Wrap them round the two halves in opposite directions & trap your finger in the wrap. Unscrew. If it's too firmly stuck for your finger use a dowel rod. To clarify:- think of it as working like the strap wrench used for removal of car oil filters.

Don't do any of the above (except maybe the rubber glove or strips of rubber trick) and DON'T use a wrench.

Take two screwdrivers.

Duct tape the handle of one screwdriver to the top part of the mouthpiece, next to the top part of the mouthpiece (wrap the duct tape around the mouthpiece top and the screwdriver handle many, many times).

Duct tape the handle of the other screwdriver to the bottom (stem) part of the mouthpiece, next to the bottom part of the mouthpiece (wrap the duct tape around the mouthpiece bottom and the screwdriver handle many, many times).

Now you'll easily be able to unscrew them without damaging them.

If the parts aren't terribly stuck together you might be able to undo them with just one screwdriver handle duct taped to the bottom part and some duct tape wrapped around the top part as in the picture above.

Wow! That is so obvious, so simple and so likely to work!

In just 30 seconds, I can think of at least two applications on my motorcycle, one on my leaf blower, one on my power washer and three on the MG where variations on that theme should produce sweet music.

Thanks!

You learn that from CG?

And if that doesn't work, a few kilos of C-4 should separate them.

Of course, you'll never find them, but you can't have everything!

Keep a pair of rubber lid grippers in your case.

I do what John does except I use my fingers in place of the screwdriver handles. Works like a charm. However, next time (notice the lack of 'if') I'll try t ith the screwdrivers....

Would putting a small amount of oil or grease on the matching surfaces help prevent this?

The duct tape works very well.

Also, just hold it by the shank and give it a few sharp wacks on a WOODEN surface that you don't care to dent. Works every time for me.

If the innertube technique doesn't work, hand strengthening might be in order.

Computer mousepad. The bottom of most of them happens be really "grippy" I've found. Works for opening bottles, jars, and un-sticking mouthpieces tops.

I learned the technique from either Warburton or DrDave (can't remember which).

Does MG stand for Machine Gun or MG sports car?
