Does anyone know who's playing principal/lead on this San Francisco Symphony performance of the Symphonic Dances from West Side Story?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3qiXYJQWBU&NR=1&feature=endscreen

He first opens up a can of whoop-booty at 3:58. Just solid. Then in the third video he makes his work in the first video seem like he was playing chopsticks. Unfortunately the end does not include applause and ovations. I hope this dude got a rousing ovation.

Any ideas who this is?

Thanks,
Mike

It is Mark Inouye, he takes one lick toward the end up the octave, sounds great.

For more of his playing check out the MTT/San Francisco recording of Mahler 8.

Mark Inouye does indeed sound great on the WSS. It's a shame that other sections of the San Francisco Symphony can't say the same - there is some truly abysmal section playing throughout those clips.

Wow. Your ears are far more discerning than mine. I really enjoyed the clips, so I would be hard pressed to find any major flaws.

Were there any sections in particular that stood out to you as abysmal? I'll go back and listen to them.

Listening to those to videos (the one you put the url to and the one after it ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dt-tq-md2_U ) takes me back to one of the two best music-related experiences of my life: playing WSS in Basel, Switzerland during the winter of 2002/2003 at the Musical Theater Basel. I got to play that stuff 8 times a week! And every time I played it, I marveled more and more at the pure genius of Bernstein's music.

Mark does great stuff with the part. Credit should also go to the other players in the section, including the 2nd trumpet who plays the high note hits at 6:00 on the video I put the URL to in this post. At least in the Pit Orchestra original arrangement, that is written into the 2nd part and it's written for D trumpet (meaning players use a Piccolo and transpose).

Lots of Orchestras bring in a trumpet player to play the first part when they do West Side's Symphonic Dances, as it's obvoiusly a bit beyond the realm of the typical, even great principal trumpet player. Mark clearly doesn't need any help!

Best wishes,

John Mohan

Since you're splitting hairs, why don't you give us specifics for each instance of "abysmal" playing? I want the specific times in the videos for each one. Also, why don't you tell us what they need to do to play it better.

Thanks!

Louie

Hi gbdeamer and Loudog,

I don't think I'm splitting hairs, I'm listening to an orchestra not playing to the best of its abilities. I'd rather not sit through the whole thing again, but if you're keen to it's worth checking out the woodwind section (particularly the flutes) who seem to be having a whale of a time doing their own thing separate from the rest of the ensemble.

I trust you have the aural facility required to hear that there are some very wrong things going on.

Back on topic, Mark is a fantastic player full of character and musicality

All best

For those of us familiar with the Marsalis on Music videos- you can see a young Mark Inouye playing the 3rd mvt of the Hummel Concerto. Its on the Tackling the Monster; Marsalis on Practice volume. He was laying it down then too!

I don't think I have the "aural facility required to hear that there are some very wrong things going on".

I've been a trumpet player for about 30 years, and until a few years ago I focused exclusively on trumpets when listening to orchestras and wind ensembles.

I'm trying to broaden my horizons and be a more critical listener, but I really enjoyed those clips of West Side Story. Yo said there was abysmal section playing throughout, but I obviously missed it.

I don't want to subject you to the pain of listening to the entirety of the videos again, but if you could direct me to the most egregious offenses I'd appreciate it.

Abysmal?

Mr. Inouye sounds great. No surprises there.

The rest of the section... they sound great too, to my ear. They aren't too loud or too soft, they add texture in the muted sections, it is in tune and supportive... I don't know what else you could ask for from section players. I am not intimately familiar with the piece, but there's certainly nothing offensive about it.

The group sounds really great. Especially on the sensitive playing, and rhythmic lines. There isn't a better orchestra on the planet for music in this style. It's a very different sound from other orchestras. I don't always quite understand MTT's gestures, but however they're communicating, it works great. Thanks for sharing the link.

Wow! Don't think I've heard a orchestral principal play like that before. Great performances!
