Question: on my new (to me) '78 Bach Strad I have developed a very perplexing issue. If I push the third valve down with any thing but straight down pressure it drags and lags very badly coming back up. I know, I know, I am supposed to push "straight down" on the valves so 'whats the problem'? well it does not happen at all on my cheaper (Blessing ML1) horn. As a matter of fact, I can push as firmly as I want on the ML1 with side pressure and there is no feeling of lag or sticking. So is the a sign of valve wear? Alignment? Or....?
I have experimented with this on the other two valves and they are prone to it slightly but not nearly as pronounced as the Third. Yes I have cleaned the horn, Yes I have oiled the horn (could it be the brand of oil? Al Cass?)There does not seem to be any debris collected in the bottom caps.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

New to you is the point. I think the Al Cass oil might be an issue. I think that 5 Starr or Hetman is a much better oil.

My ’72 strad has the same issue. I switched to Berp Bio Oil which is a thicker oil intended for looser valves. Problem solved.
My son's Getzen from the same period had a similar issue and a good scrubbing of the bottom of the valve casing fixed that one. |

I think Tom is correct. One problem I've had in buying used horns is this, I believe: everyone's bio mechanics vary, so a horn's valves wear patterns adapt to a certain player, then the next guy has problems.
Al Cass is pretty light and tends to evaporate quickly, a thicker oil and / or one made for older horns might help. Or it might not, but it's worth a try.

When I had that problem on my Bach, Alisyn was the only brand that helped. |
