Good evening gentlemen and gentlewomen! I had the pleasure recently of speaking with a '50s-60s era NYC lead player, and he told me that for him, Bernie Glow was the MASTER of lead trumpet stylings.

Can anybody recommend some recordings with him on lead?

Bill Potts "Porgy and Bess". Gary McFarland "Profiles". Two wonderful examples of Bernie Glow's lead playing. It was understood when Bernie Glow was top dog in NYC that if you came into the studio and knew Bernie was on the date, you did not sit in the lead chair. By the same token, he was famous for saying, "if it goes above a F, call Ernie Royal". He would also pass parts according to who was in the section with him and did not have a problem with sharing 1st parts if it suited someone else better.

Plus one for the "Porgy and Bess" album, one of my desert island albums since the early sixties, still listen once a month or so. Brilliant lead playing, also a great example of a band full of great individual solo voices who are also able to creat a wonderful ensemble. Bernie Glow on the east coast, Gozzo on the west , the lead player heroes of their era..

In case anyone above wasn't aware of it, the 1969 New Yorker magazine profile of Bernie Glow is a real snapshot of the player and the era:
