Hello everyone,
I stated in another thread that I would begin posting some finalized specs on a flugelhorn that is nearing completion. I will post in this thread new details every so often and take questions regarding previously posted specs only.

Let's start with the bell:

Copper
Two-piece sheet
twenty-two gauge
semi-round bend

The slide configuration:

The slides are similar to the 3895 but are slanted outward. There were three things we immediately noticed.

1. This had no affect on the sound of the horn but did however close the grip making the hold much more comfortable.

2. Although the current "beta" weighs .3 ounces less it feels much lighter due to the over all balance.

3. Out of necessity we had to redesign the trigger in both appearance and function.

There you go. Note that this is an early concept horn with no trigger, old trim/ferrules etc.

Thanks. That's interesting the way the slides are slanted in there.

It is much more ergonomic. It also allowed us to redesign the trigger which is not in the picture.

Valve Section:

1. The valve bodies are made out of a bronze alloy and the crooks coming out of them are gold brass.

2. The ballisters, finger buttons, top caps and bottom caps are new.

3. The horn will come standard with a heavier weight #3 bottom cap.

The bronze material is pretty interesting in this situation. It has a noticeable affect on the color, response and feel while playing. It isn't radical by any means but it is something we've not done before. Of course the pistons will come with a lifetime warranty. This is a picture of the "beta" which is nearly the production model.

edit: I forgot to mention the nickel bracing between the valve bodies.

Adam,

Great looking horn. I can't wait to try it. I'm also very happy to see a standard water key. I always have trouble emptying the water out of the amados on my flugel....I do prefer them on my Bb's but having a standard water key on a flugel to me, is a big plus.

edit: Clearly there are two different horns there, as the top picture has amados....so maybe this will be an option? Just saying, it is an option that I would choose, if I were buying a horn.

Very cool! Will you have one at Midwest or just at NAMM? Either way I can't wait to check it out!

Best,

There will be no amados on any horn that I design for the Custom Reserve line. I have eight concept horns and the "beta" in my office right now. I was using different horns to show different features.

I'm not sure we will have a production model at Midwest but we will absolutely have one at NAMM.

The caps remind me of the Genesis. And I wonder, if anyone will find they squeeze the slides, resulting in deformation or other valve issues. I certainly wouldn't but I still wonder. Trigger placement may prevent that.

Very interesting, for sure. I love the colors!

I hold my current flugel by the slides and have never had a problem. I don't see how the different angle would be any more prone to damage, providing it is braced well. I suppose anything is possible though.

Squeezing them between thumb and fingers as shown in the photo would offer leverage to the player which slides in the standard configuration do not. This would be akin to the force applied on a angled trumpet second valve slide by setting the horn down on that side, or putting music on top of the horn in the case.

You can't really squeeze on the slides though because you would be actuating the trigger. The player's right hand carries the majority of the weight.
